K&N Typhoon vs. REVI intake?
Hey Gang,
I'm not sure if this is a repost...me being a FNG and all. If so, sorry.
I had a K&N drop-in filter on my bike. Turns out that the stock filter was better engineered for my bikes breathing needs. Even with the PowerCommander/Fuel Management computer tuned on a Dyno, the stock produced a smoother power curve.
Notwithstanding I'm prepared to make a compromise. I was just going to get a K&N drop-in filter but now am looking at, either the TYPHOON or the REVI just because of what happened with my motorcycle. Does anyone have any information/experience with either of these intake systems?
The websites claim no fussing with the ECU but I'm skeptical. I've heard of rough-idle issues with the TYPHOON. Is this always the case? Is this a problem with the REVI? Any advice, tips, etc. would be appreciated.

k&n version 1 was horrible and caused idling issues.
version 2 is better, but unless it seals the intake off from the engine bay, it's going to be worse than stock since the rx-8 (stock) isolates the intake from the hot engine bay air..
revi is great, but you really want the intake duct too, as it brings cooler air ... on the other hand, you can also save yourself $300 and buy the air duct and use it with the stock box.

no cutting. but it might not fit perfectly up to the stock box. You should be able to rig it up to seal it up tight if you wanted though. Not a big deal, sealed or not, you're bringing fresh air up to the box, instead of getting air through a foot long sock (vfad tube)

I tested the RB unit before it went to market.
No problems here and I still use it. A moderator has it and most of the people in San Berdo grooup has it now too. That 8 more people.
No problems with idle.

I have the Revi and Duct as well and it's a GREAT product! Fitment is superb, idle is smoooooth, and it brings in cool air to the engine (which is exactly what the Renesis needs)

The REVI seems to be the choice here. But isn't $500 a bit much for intake? I've been out of the car game, so forgive my cheapness.
Can you feel the difference? Some here have said that their intakes make a whistling sound? Is this the case with the REVI?
Also, can anyone who has the REVI system installed post a pic?

but hey, you always have the choice of keeping EVERYTHING stock and save that $450 for something that you deem more valuable, so don't lecture people on whether you think it's a 'good value' or not. no car mods are ever a 'good value' IMO
the REVi system makes the engine sound louder in a good way, now the car sounds like a louder jet engine lol
pic won't do it justice, as Racing Beat designed it so it has a very stock-ish look, and the air duct is hidden behind the front nose, so you won't see it from the outside.
power-wise, the gain is minimal, it's mostly for the sound, which i do enjoy very much

it is not cheap, but it's a quality intake. The biggest strike against the likes of the revi and others, is that you cannot use them when you go turbo. I bought the revi and then sold it off in less than a 2 month period ![Frown](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/frown.gif)
Thats the price I paid for not planning ahead, and buying things on a whim.

Search Revi and you will find a ton of pic's even how to do installation.
Obewan: everything is way expensive for the RX-8 vs other cars. Lets say............. 30 to 50%

Last I remember, I paid $80 for an intake system...thats all man. So chill. If I was knocking mods, I wouldn't post this thread right?
That said, the sound is what I'm looking for too. I know with an intake, I'm not gonna get "crap your pants" speed. I just want to accentuate the already cool sounds of the engine. I'm not ready for exhaust yet...that and I'm afraid it may over power the sound of the engine.

If your mechinacaly inclined it's easy.
Once again do that search and you will see the duct, get all your answers and learn alot about the system. There are a ton of pic's on two or three threads.
For least loudest it's RB intake. I don't think anyone will disagree on that one.

Here's a picture of my buddy test fitting the air duct on my car. If you look under the hood, you can see the Revi box.
Here's a picture of my engine bay to show you how 'stock' the Revi looks.

you can take your time and have it all done in 2-3 hours. Easiest just to do them both at the same time since it requires taking the bumper off. (which is SUPER easy to do)
-The kit will include step by step instructions that are very accurate so you're in good hands.

buy them both at once, it'll be much easier that way.
Razz: I noticed that a lot of the 04's have the windshield washer tank painted black! Hmm, might look pretty cool to paint that and the radiator bottle.

Phantom: yeah, you do need to take the bumper off because the stock intake actually has a cold air inlet that you'll be removing. (it's TINY compared to RB's)

Now, with this specific intake, you don't need to recalibrate the ECU to match the new mass of air comming into the combustion chamber? Wont the car run lean since you're upping the air and not the fuel and exhaust?

nope, our ECU is more then capable of handling the adjustments on its own. You'll never get a CEL or anything with this intake.
The one thing I might suggest is to clear the short term memory on the ECU after you install the intake. This isn't necessary by any means but some people like to do it. This car 'learns' your driving habits, conditions, etc so by adjust the amount of air coming into the engine, you might want your car to recalibrate itself.
There's instructions in the DIY section about how to accomplish this. It's SUPER easy and basically just requires you to tap the brake pedal 20 times in under "X" amount of time or something easy like that.
