Keyless Entry Fobs Question

Ok when I bought my car used I only got one key and one fob. Well there are several fobs on ebay and they all have the same FCC ID# KPU41805 which matches mine. The problem is mine has a Visteon Model# 41848 when all the ones being advertised are 41845. Does the model number matter or the FCC ID good enough? I want to buy one off the internet because the dealer wants $120 for the fob alone (talking 2004 key & fob here). Can you please post your model number if it matches the ones on ebay, that way I know that it should work. Thanks.

That's a good question b/c I had the same problem. Seems like 2004's only come with one key

lol.. not sure if that's true... but I'd be curious to know the answer b/c I'll need to buy another FOB eventually as well.....

My June '04 build (2004 model year) has the 41848 model number. Most likely Visteon just changed the model number between the '03 builds and '04 builds (still in the 2004 model year).

As a side note, the new 2004's came with two all access keys, one valet key, and two fobs.

So do you think the FCC ID# is all that matters, because that is the frequency I would guess that the remote uses.

No. My Model # is the same (41848) and my car was built in 8/03.

all 2004 cars come with 3 keys .
2 black primary keys and 1 grey valet key. if they were not prvided to you upon purchase go get them from you dealer. do not pay extra for them- you already paid for them!

My 2004 came with two keys and I had to fight my Mazda dealer to get the third valet key.

FYI about FCC ID: it gets assigned when you submit a product to be tested to make sure it doesn't radiate too much power, transmit out of band, or any other things that the FCC would object to. It's not linked to the application, though, just the circuit and antenna, so it's possible that two products with the same FCC ID (meaning that they were built around the same electronic hardware) could be transmitting different types of codes, although it would be in the same frequency band. So it's possible that they might not both work in the same application.

I don't know anything specific about key fobs, but I've seen products go through FCC certification, so I just thought I'd share.

No I got the car used, so that is why I only got one key and remote. I will just stick to getting one with matching model and FCC numbers. Thanks for your help.

Unhappy Do not just match the FCC numbers!!!

I tried doing that, and the remote would not work when following the programming procedure. If your car is made before 7/04, you need the one that has mismatched model number & FCC ID. model number should be 41848 and fcc id should be 41805. I don't know why, but the other ones will not work with a pre 7/04 RX-8. I have two useless remotes now plus the two working ones that I paid through the nose to get from my dealer since I didn't want to waste any more money on Ebay remotes that didn't work.

Well I found an auction on ebay with the 2 matching numbers for my remote that I have now that I am bidding on, if it falls through then I am just going to order one from http://www.keylessride.com/ they have them for around 50 bucks still half off the dealer price. Raz0rama I can see what you mean in if you go to that site I just posted and do a search on RX8 they have 2 categories pre and post 7/04 build dates. Makes me wonder if the 05 remote key combo would work on an 8 that was built in 03.

Did you buy it used from a dealer or private?
If it's from the dealer, go get them to give you another key and fob,
or see if they will change the ignition key.

IMO it would be real easy to steal your car if you had the other key and fob, and the person who has it, would likely be local.

I have had the car for about 2 months now, do you think it would be any good to fight with the dealer to get a second set?

Yes, I live in Los Angeles and purchased my car in Las Vegas, so it was about two months before I returned to Vegas to ask for my missing valet key. They resisted, but this is what I said," I'm not asking for anything extra, I'm only asking to receive a set of keys I ALREADY PAID FOR. That seemed to have done it. Hope this helps.
