Lightweight Flywheel Sugestions?

Hello All,

New to this forum, but have had rotaries for some time now.

I have an 04 RX-8 getting a heart transplant (engine) and was considering updating to a lightweight flywheel.

Problem is: huge selection! Not sure what direction/product to use. The more reading I do, the less clear things become.

Should I just stick with stock or spice it up?

Definatly going to update throw out bearing to the BHR, seems like you cant go wrong.

Any suggestions appreciated!!!

Regards,

Nick

Fidanza, and BHR's flywheel are the lightest and best priced. If that helps.

Fidanza's is 9.75 lbs. and BHR's is a tad under 9.0 lbs. However, they are both made by the same company.

BHR's flywheel hands down...lightest made for the RX8.

And yes, don't forget our heavy duty throwout bearing.

The ACT ProLite is a 9.8 lb. chrome-moly 'wheel and they are made with quality. The biggest difference is that aluminum 'wheels have replaceable friction faces that cost about $70/set while chrome wheels are not able to be resurfaced.

Speaking of which, the website is one of our major agenda items after we're back in town from the SoCal dyno day.

We'll have updated product information including some entertaining items to stick around for.

Re: the heavy-duty release bearing, BHR is the only place where you can get such a bearing (as far as I know and they weren't easy to find!).

BHR specifies the use of the ACT CW03 as it seems to be a little batter-balanced for use with light flywheels than the factory 52X counterweight. ACT recently raised their prices as much as 40% so the average price of the weight went up.

BHR also sells most of the same stuff as other vendors, Summit, Jeg's, etc. and our prices are pretty damned competitive. Even moreso when you consider the level of after-sale support you get along with the purchase. Other vendors ask US for information about the stuff they sell as they do not specialize in the RX-8 like the team at BHR does.

For a list of brands we sell, click on the link in my sig.

I have an 8.4lb flywheel that I bought from Pettit. I originally installed it when I blew my first motor and wow it made a huge difference. When I blew my second motor I decided to take it out because I had been thinking about selling the car. I purchased and installed a brand new friction ring so it is practically like brand new. If you are interested in buying it send me a PM. It comes with the counter balancer already installed and the new friction disk. The only part of the flywheel that has seen any previous use is the teeth around the edges for the starter and they look brand new.

Yes a lighter flywheel helps the motor not have to work as hard to spin the "heavy" stock one so it "spools" up quicker.

the downside is that a lighter flywheel cannot store as much energy so the rpms drop quicker between shifts.

it requires more work to drive with a lighter flywheel.

I got my clutch/flywheel set up from BHR and I love it! The car accelerates noticeably quicker and has a more torquey feel to it. It is, by far, my favorite mod to my car and I highly recommend it!

Then there is the help you get from BHR. Ray has helped me with many (and I mean many) questions I have had with products I received as well as many other RX8 questions.

The customer service I received from Ray is worth a lot much more than I've paid for products (his prices are good too). I highly recommend BHR.

Kersh is correct also it does not store as much energy so it will take some getting used to to get the shifting smooth

Ya wanna deviate from the factory set-up on anything, yer gonna have some changes but I don't think a lighter flywheel is THAT big of a deal to accomodate.

Wow, great stuff guys!

Think I have it narrowed down to two flywheels.

Can all the flywheels be used with stock pressure plate and disk?

BTW I never mentioned, my 8 is stock with no plans to drastically mod it for huge HP gains, as I find it fun to drive as is.

Your input has been great, thanks!

I second that quote about Ray's, and as an extension BHR's, customer service being second to none.

And I'm based in Singapore.

His products are all made of a very high quality and I have never had any complaints from my customers when using his products (I run my own garage out here) and hell I'm using BHR stuff on my very own ride!

Hi All

is there someone who actually took a stock flywheel and machined some material of the side "ridge" or weight around the outside ??

i think it should make approx half a lb lighter i guess, but cheaper than new units, and then just inbetween prolite and std.

anyone know as i am thinking of doing it, my 8 is getting rebuild now, 208 000km (130 000miles) not bad hey!

any feedback

Thanks

Philip
