I would check to make sure a vacuum line didnt detach.

Has the car always done this or is it a new noise?

Did you have a an oil change lately ( there are a few vacuum lines in the area of the filter)?

- If you just got your car, and are unfamiliar with rotaries, it might just be that lovely whine the rotors make. However I'll give you the benefit that you know its not that

I think thats the sound of the whirling rotary engine. I can hear mine when im driving really slow around a parking lot but when your cruising at high speeds, the noise is gone because there are other road noises around.

That might just be first gear whine due to the synchros, which is fairly common for MTs as far as I know. Was what I was going to suggest, but the poster said 3rd and 6th gears.

I have a whistle-like noise that can be noticable from the Bose amps (I believe) in my car when my stereo is on. If I cut the power to the deck, it stops. One more thing to try I suppose, if the radio isn't already off.

I have the AT and come to think of it, it only has that whining sound in first gear.

Mine has 100 miles on it in 4 days and I have the same noise. The whir of the Rotary is distinct but this sounds different and is only noticeable at very slow speeds. I wondered if it was "normal" as well. The radio is off when I hear it.

After reading this post a couple of days ago, it made me listen carefully once or twice while depleting my gas level rapidly
I did hear a whistle type sound, I think it is the gulping for air that is causing it.

This is an accurate description for me, too. It's pretty distinctive, too. Now over 25K, started noticing it sometime after 12K. It definitely wasn't there early on.

sup3rbad, any chance you noticed the sound only after an oil change?

Edit: "Now over 2.5K , started noticing it sometime after 1.2K ." Sorry! I didn't finish my coffee before that message!

That is some serious driving.

I will have about 9K on my car when I complete my road trip in a few weeks. I will post if I have any problems.
