low speed driving?
I'm new to manual transmissions, so could someone tell me if it is necessary to use both clutch and gas for 1-5mph driving? it seems that if i put it in first, it won't do 1-5mph without becoming jerky somewhat. Am I not letting the clutch out properly, or might this be a transmission problem?

What you're describing is normal.
I'd suggest letting the clutch out enough to get the car moving at the speed you want. If that speed is too low and the engine is lugging, then put the clutch in and hold it on the floor while you coast along. When you need another burst, repeat.
You shouldn't ride the clutch (ie, use both the gas and the clutch for an extended period of time), it'll wear out.

Use hills & neutral drops to your advantage if smoothness is your goal. Learn to modulate the gas just right depending on the inertia of the car - it can take precise modulation. Usually if I get down slow enough to where I stumble, I just neutral drop, and kindasorta double-clutch (blip throttle after putting it in gear, not before, though either would work) back into 2nd when I need to go forward again.
