front or rear studs?
if its the front, very easy to replace
the rear is a big job...you have to remove the spindle from the axle to get to the studs...some notch out the spindle to do it too, but I don't know how well it works

yeah a mechanic can do it, it won't be cheap though
I would try to rethread it first before you take it to a mechanic, which I have done with success.
you can rent a decent tap and die set at auto parts stores that should be able to handle it
it will not work with a cheap die however, it will ruin the die.....I have done it before, lol.

Here's the link on my travails trying to replace two rear studs I broke. Definitely try to fix the threads. The studs are super-hardened steel so be careful.
Failing that, you're about to get a real education on your rear suspension and axles!
