You probably should use the search function, but to answer quickly it's the latest code for the PCM (car's computer). It sets all kinds of things, such as how much fuel is injected, what the engine does when you start up (they added flooding protection in the "M" flash), etc. If you don't have it yet any dealer should be happy to install it. Takes about 10 min. once they get started.

Welcome back David!

Xenan, info about the "M" flash is stickied at the very top of this very forum. Or, you can go here.

Correct me if im wrong but if your build date was after february '04 shouldn't your 8 already have the m flash?

Nope. The "M" flash came out in April, as I recall. And even if it came out (for instance) 4/15 and your car had a build date of April '04, you still can't be certain it came with the "M" as it takes a week or two for the new flashes to get to the production lines. You can be fairly sure a May build came with "M" but not earlier.

Most likely you do need it - but it depends on when you bought your car, and how proactive the dealership was about flashes. For instance, if you bought it in May, it could have the "M" flash installed if they had their $hit together and kept the cars up to date on flash levels. But most dealerships don't do this, even if they're theoretically supposed to.

As for getting it done, how hard it is to get a dealership to flash you depends completely on the dealership. Best thing you can do is print out the TSB here and take it in with you. It pretty clearly states all RX-8s withing a certain VIN range (which yours, with a Nov '03 build date should fall into) MUST have the flash done. But still some dealerships will give you grief. If they do, find another dealership.

Oh, and read the long "M" flash thread folks - all this info (and more) is there.
