Manual Transmission Question: Reverse

Just bought a 2006 RX-8 from a dealership. Vehicle had 400 miles on it. So far I havent had any real problems and love the car. I've noticed that when I shift into reverse and then slowly let off the clutch, when my vehicle starts to back up I can "feel" the car/clutch shake as if it's about to stall. Obviosuly giving it some gas eliminates this problem, but I was wondering if this is normal for an RX-8?

How long have you been driving non auto trans cars? On any real MT car failure to give it some gas while letting out the clutch can cause a stall.

Prior to the RX8 I drove a WRX with a Manual Transmission. When slowly letting out the clutch and the vehicle JUST starts to back up there was absolutely NO feeling of a stall, similar to "inching up" your vehicle in first while stopped in 1st gear. With the RX8 the second the vehicle starts to move it feels shaky as if it could stall out.

Hope that explains it better.

You remember what the cold Idle speed was of the WRX? RX-8's have a high idle speed that once placed into gear drops significantly if you don't bring it back up with some gas. That is only a guess on my part. Since I always gave my MT cars gas when going into 1st / Rev I have not noticed anything unusual with the way the RX-8's MT works.

Most cars need a little throttle when starting in first or reverse. At least all the MT cars I've driven do.

I know exactly what ur talking about.. my 8 does the same thing.. u just have to gas them more in reverse then say in 1st gear..

I concur. I think it's because it's real easy to engage in 1st with very little gas vs other MT I've drive, yet the reverse is like a normal MT requiring some rev. My bro noticed this when he drove my 8.

Yeah you have to give it some gas, its pretty normal when you put it in reverse that it jerks and feels like its going to stall if your not giving it gas.

low torque car. i don't know what it makes at idle, but I'm assuming it's something like 20 hp. give it some gas.

reverse doesnt have a syncro. IIRC

that and the shifter goes directly into the tranny.

Its gonna get rough sometimes
