microGreen oil filter

http://www.microgreenfilter.com/howyousave/

Any opinions on this? Opportunity to save money or reduce particulates? They have a filter for the RX-8.

sounds like an Opportunity to run horribly filthy oil through your car for 24,000 miles before changing it.

No thanks. I don't buy that this can actually keep your oil clean for 24,000 miles. there are more problems then just particulate. the oil decomposes after a while if you don't change it, and it won't lubricate as well even if it is as free from particulate as they say it will be with their filter.

What this looks like, is a scam aimed at companies that run a fleet of vehicles, allowing them to save money by keeping the oil just barely clean enough to prevent engine failure during the time the company keeps the car in it's fleet. Not advisable if you actually care about your engine, but fantastic if you're say, a car rental company and will be selling the car at 35,000 miles.

There is no voodoo science with filters. You either increase the surface area to capture more particles (that's why filters are pleated) or you increase the micron rating of the media to filter "better". But a filter element with a lower micron rating must be changed more often because it clogs more easily.

I suspect it's only an advertising claim to take a regular filter and not change it as often. Let's face it, changing oil and filter at 3000 miles is over kill and a waste of money.

what a total load of bull.

A new filter cost couple of bux. If people wanna cheap that 5 bux everytime they do oil change, they might as well dont change their oil at all.

If it was just the particulates that were causing the need for an oil change that would work...problem is there are other issues that the filter can't get rid of....

Breakdown of the lubricating qualities of the oil...contamination by condensation and fuel etc...

Nothing wrong with a better filter......but it's not the whole story

I just went and looked at the filter...it is a bypass type filter....so when or if it plugs up it will bypass the filter....not a good idea Plus it doesn't micro filter all the oil...it is a partial flow type filter.....

There are other better choices out there...this looks like a real expensive conventional filter...IMO not worth the high cost

You would be an idiot to run a no bypass oil filter (if such a thing exists for a car).

If the filter would then clog and there is no bypass, you just have starved your engine from oil.

Most race applications use non-bypass filters...what do you think a high capacity filter is going to plug up with and cause a failure...if it is full of crap...then your engine just died

The filter i have on mine is rated for 50K miles before it loses 20% of flow or something like that...I replace it at the same interval as I did the stock crap filter

It's a win-win thing from my respect

Problem with the stock type filters is the bypass is unpredictable..it is a little rubber valve..that can stick open and provide no filtration very easily

yeah most oil filters inclluding all brand names...purolator/powerflo/fram/mobil etc can filter ok for about 5-6k miles but you should alwasy change your filter everytime that you change the oil

if you change it at 2k miles change thefilter if u cange at 4k change it jsut do it do not cheat ur engine especially the rotary not only will u burn oil but if it's dirty you're gonna try to burn little pieces of metal from normal wear etc that will eat up apex seals/rotors/housing etc

and then u will be ready to have the engine replaced and when the dealer says he wants records of oil changes and yo say...."I have the magic filter I only change ever 20k miles" he's gonna say oh ok.......your total is $5,512.14 thank you have a nice day!

This is OOOLLLDDDD tech from the diesel engine side of life. Diesels used to have a secondary filter setup called a Luber-finer. Now days it is built into the main oil filter, a large paper element and a small super fine bypass filter element.
This meaning that some oil will bypass the main element and be super filtered by the bypass side.
Even with this super duper filter we still change them at 250 hours, 500 if a full synthetic is used.
