MIS-SHIFT am i ok?
So i was goin about 75-80 and and had to get past this car. well i downshifted and missed 4th somehow... and wen to second. i reved match for 4th but obviously thats not going to do much when i get into second instead . the clutch was never fully off and i didn't hit the rev limiter... how much damage do you think i did? to tranny, or to engine? I've searched abut all i could find was the 6th and reverse thread.
and another thing... form a say 4th to 2nd downshift? say about 40? is it hard for you to get it in gear kinda like notchy. like you would need a bit of pull to get it in with or without rev matching.
thanks again for the help guys i much appreciate it.

Haha! I've done that before! I don't think it will be too harmful as long as you don't make a habit out of it. As far as downshifting from 4th to 2nd at around 40mph, I find it a little tough to make this shift too. I try to just take my time, making sure I get it all the way in gear and I let out the clutch easy. I try to avoid shifting into 2nd above 35 mph as much as I can. Can't imagine it's too good for the tranny.

The rev limiter wouldn't have done anything anyways when its being mechanically over'reved. I don't think you can do much damage to the engine from overrevving but the tranny definatly doesn't like it... much differen't from a piston engine.

What took the beating in this case are the synchros - even if you hadn't let the clutch out at all...
If it's still shifting into 2nd OK, then like Big Mike said, you're prolly OK... Just don't make a habit of it. If it feels "hard" or "notchy" - don't do it - it's definitely not "good."

Why would you need to double clutch a synchronized transmission?
I think in my '79 Pinto, first gear wasn't synchronized, but every car I've owned since then all forward gears are....
Altho, that said, I have noticed that at a stop sign (in my 8, not the Pinto <g>), sometimes it's easier (but not necessary) to spin the gears in neutral before shifting into 1st. You have to wait a little bit for them to stop spinning when you put the clutch in, otherwise you get a little "clunk".....

Its not necessary but doing it properly along with a proper rev-match will yield longer synchro life. Plus its almost a necessity if you are downshifting more than 1 gear at once.

the transmission is not made of porcelain. these things happen. Just becareful never to fully **** up and engage the clutch all the way, or else your engine can blow.
4 to 2 is my favorite shift. I have learned it well, once you have mastered it, the twisties will bow to you.

Massive thread bump since I had a pretty unsettling occurrence earlier today.
I was driving home from work and decided to redline the **** out of my car like I typically do every day. I was going about 70, and mis-shifted 4th gear, and instead, went into second. The revs went past 10k on the tachometer (lol), and I'm kind of traumatized since I've never mis-shifted to this extent. The event lasted for about a second until I threw it in neutral and had my "aw hell no" face on.
Do I have anything to worry about? Could I have screwed up the synchros? Or the engine?
