Misfiring and other problems?

The other day I went to my emissions test and failed, I have an 04' rx8 and everytime I start it up it takes like 3 seconds to start up fully. And on my way to emissions my car turned off when I was driving? The ac and radio turned off and back on real quick. So I brought it to the shop and I thought I needed new sparkplug. And the guy said I don't need new sparkplugs but apparently I've been starting up my car wrong the whole time. When I turn my car on I put my foot on the clutch and brake and turn the key, the guy says now I need to just turn the key as far as it can go without turning the car on and let it warm up and then start it like I was. And I wanted to know would doing this really stop my cat from turning off while driving? Please help thank you

uhhhh....the guy you took the car too is an idiot. You can't "warm-up" a car while putting the car in the ON ignition position. You were probably down the right path with thinking plugs/wires/coils.

Is he a diesel mechanic? Warming up the glow plugs always worked for me.

Personally I would pull the plugs and inspect them before calling a local for second opinion.

How many miles you got on your car? I assume high since it's an 04...but you never know.

He may be refering to the electronic fuel pump.

In winter or comming out of storage it is a good idea to turn the key on. Usually after 3 seconds the fuel has been pumpped up to where it can be used.

What the Hell does this mean?

And I wanted to know would doing this really stop my cat from turning off while driving?

Obviously you don't know a thing about cars.

Take a shop class in scholl or college.
Find an Old Dog and have him teach you a few thing.

It sucks paying attention to elders... doesn't it?

It has 40k miles on it, and I just got it back from the shop and it sounded the same when I started it up, like it's giving all it's got to start up, but the engine Check light turned off and he said I should pass emissions.

You are around the time in which you need to replace plugs, wires and coils. What did he do to your car so you would pass emissions?

gotta love mechanics... no matter what country they always try to rip you off!

Learn more about your car man and do the maintenance your self... download a workshop manual and READ.

Yes...the RX8 does need to warm up before you go tearing around town. However, that isn't going to fail an echeck. What CEL did it throw or what other reason did you have for failing your echeck?
