Modern Key Fob Swap?
Hi all-
Hope someone has some insight on this. I -abhor- the stupid credit card key fob that the 8 comes with... It is forever refusing to register when I lock/unlock the car with the door-handle button, and worse, 75% of the time it refuses to detect the key when I'm in the car and it won't let me start it, forcing me to take off the little cap and use the backup key. My question... Could I buy a key for, say, a 2019 Miata for my 2008, have it coded, and have it work? Anybody tried this/have experience with it? I would think that as long as it has the four buttons (unlock, lock, trunk, panic) and it's coded correctly, there's no reason it shouldn't work. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

The key card car's have receivers all over the place if one goes bad you will have problems like this from how I understand it. Most of the time people report problems being caused by the rear receiver which is under the rear bumper, They clean it off and make sure the connection is good an then that seems to fix it most of the time. If you have another key try changing to that one and see of the problem still continue's or not. If it doesn't then the key battery is going bad if it still happens then it would be a receiver most likely.

look for a remove rear bumper thread, once you are able to remove it. Clean the little black box with the wire going into it, should be pretty easy to locate since its the only black box. That is the rear antenna and it gets pretty dirty. From all I have read on this problem that seems to be the most common fix.
