MSP16 Flash, what can i expect

good good good, thanks! wasn't sure if mazda like changed things or if my car would be too old. i called them and they gave me a bunch of info on msp's and recalls that my car was already seen for. thanks for the response!

well MSP16 is just a reflash (i think), so its not like they have to supply some oddball part for the rest of eternity.

I just purchased a 2004 recently and contacted Mazda to see if all the recalls were performed which they have records indicating that they were. However they don't show my car having the MSP16 and they told me that it is not a recall item. The dealer called Mazda to ask if they could perform the update for me but were denied so if I want it done I have to pay $75. Is it worth paying for? My car has 98k and as far as I know it's the org engine.

Yes, it is very much worth it. It's not going to magically make your engine better after 98k of running without it, but it is valuable across the board. For $75 it's an easy yes.

If this $75 is for the minimum 1hr shop charge, have them do something else to fill up the remaining time. Give them some oil and a filter. Hand them some spark plugs. Just anything to get your moneys worth.

They probably gonna say nah. Cuz it takes us 1/2 hr to load ids, 15 mins to dl and another 15 to flash, lol

Print out the TSB. It says they're to check for MSP16 on an 8 brought in for any kind of service, and do it if it's not yet been done. So bring yours in for an oil change and show that part of the TSB to the service writer.
Mine was done when I came in for an oil change, and I don't remember waiting much longer than the usual 45 minutes.

Keep in mind that just because there is a TSB doesn't mean it's free. Recalls are free, TSBs are not. TSBs are free ONLY if there is an applicable warranty left. No warranty that covers the TSB (like bumper to bumper to cover the tail light water TSB) and they can still do the TSB, but you will get charged for it. The TSB is just a set of instructions, not a recall.

I can cheat on the memory thing. My job is working with OEM documentation from nearly every major manufacturer

I had MSP-16 performed this past summer after I spent a week in Williamsburg, VA and the car wasn't idling so well in the heat. (I felt like a negligent owner, had the car for years at that point) The dealership (Dick Ide Mazda) called the DCSM and got the dealership to perform the job free of charge. The technician came out with a laptop and did the flash right on the spot. He didn't even put a trickle charge on the battery like the procedure says--probably not a bad thing since I forgot about my Sohn adapter. My car is an '04 and obviously out of the warranty period. The key phrase was this: "My car does not idle well in high ambient temperatures." Once I mentioned that, things went smoothly.

I had this flash done today while my 8 was in with a broken clutch pedal mount. I live in South Carolina and can't wait to see it this fixes the summer heat issues. Also everyone need to get the clutch pedal replaced and or looked at.
