Exclamation To much coolant. Now what do I do?

So my coolant was low. I added 16.9oz of watter and now its over flowing from the over flow line on the right of the coolant tank
What should I do?

Got a turkey baster?

Keep it off the power steering connectors or you'll have trouble there.

Not helpful...

If you have any hose laying around, maybe you could connect it to the overflow hose port and drain the excess into a container...

Otherwise, its turkey time!

May not have been helpful but my point is still made, don't do something to your car if you don't know what your doing.

Then how will you learn how to do it?
Could wait for someone to teach you, or just pay someone... or just try it and see what happens and be ready to fix your mistakes.

I've only learned by reading these forums, another club member helping me, or doing it myself and sometimes messing it up and then having to figure out how to fix it.

I'm new to this forum but as I read through, I see more and more of these kinds of comments. The whole point of a forum is to share your experiences and knowledge so that everyone can learn.

No one learns anything from comments like that, and your not the only one who makes them. Yes, he screwed up...but he admits he screwed and has now come to the forum for HELP, not to be bashed.

Anyways, one of the easiest things you can do has been suggested with that turkey baster.

My $.02

Slip-ups happen. And you never know what you know or don't know until you give it a try. "Whoops" is the world's best teacher.

Dominion - two things to consider. First, if you use a turkey baster, that baster's future use will always be for coolant. Never food. Second, if you use a normal antifreeze mix, adding just water dilutes it. If you ever contemplate going to a colder climate, you'll need to drain the system a bit and re-balance it. Consider getting an antifreeze tester, which looks like a turkey baster with a float in it. You can use it to suck out the excess and also see how the mix is.

Thats exactly what I did. I use it to suck out extra coolant AND to test the coolant's capability.

I ended up overfilling mine when I changed the coolant. As the engine warms it sucks in coolant and you keep adding to the resevoir, revving occasionally to bleed any air bubbles out. So yeah, it's pretty easy to overfill if you've got a big funnel filled on top of the resevoir waiting for any further burps. No biggie. I already routed and extended the drain hose when I fixed my powersteering connectors, so I just let nature take its course -- it can overflow however much it likes.

If you overflow your coolant, you can jack up one side of your car a little bit. If you need to tip it even more, place one jack on top of another jack and jack up both jacks to get some serious tippage. OR you can try cutting the power line to your radiator fans and allow the car to overheat for about 30 minutes. This should cause the coolant to boil and it will overflow out the top.

My personal fav method involves displacing coolant by dropping rocks into the overflow tank.

Man if you can't be helpful just don't say anything. I've seen worse mistakes at the stealerships or jiffylube overfilling my oil. Don't him what he should or shouldn't do. If you do it yourself you can always correct any mistakes you make. Like you have never made a mistake.

I hope I never see you post having any problems with your car, because you'll get lit up. I would go into it more, but I'm not trying to get banned over a sorry unsympathetic piece like you. Thank you for making these forums a better place, I mean come on...

end rant.

OP: Glad to see your problem was rectified.

While your at it... put a longer hose on the overfill resoviour.

Route to the bottom of the car or else you will get a bug mess and antifreeze will eat up the engine bay when it sprays out.

This is a special device developed for just such an occasion .
Instructions are simple :

Remove overflow tank cap
drive through loop de loop at steady 30mph
check water level and repeat if neccessary
