Unhappy my 8 is sick can you help?...

so i started the car in the garage today and put it in reverse and all of a sudden boom. sounds more like a big burst of air then an explosion. but sounded as if it came out of the exhuast. steering feels a bit stiff but i think thats more from being paranoid of what that first pop was. so i drove the car took it trough some turns gave it some good driving and there was no problems. then as i sat at light i could feel the car shake every say 15-20 sec interval? which i think was nomal too but the whole paranoia thing... well all went well and put her back in the garage and had this odd smell. and its not the clutch nor the breaks. On top of that when i gave it a bit of rev the exhuast pops. sounds like.... poofpoof poof poof. almost like backfires. well thats all i have no clue what it could be hope you can help out. thanks.

What is "this much trouble"? You heard a sound you can't identify, sensed some things that may or may not be related, and you already are sorry you bought the RX-8? What other "trouble" have you had to makes you feel that way? Drive the car and don't be so ****. You'll live longer and be happier.

Possible cat failure. Has it ever flooded? How many miles? Are you the first owner?

nope the car never flooded and im the first owner. its not that i hate the car. its just that im not use to buying a car brand new and having rough idles or what seems to be minor backfires or screaming breaks. never the less its a great car. so excuse my bitching. i just dont' want to take it to the dealer and get some half *** toyota corolla to drive for a day. thanks for help. i have a odd feeling its the car also. thanks alot

could the pop have been the ABS check thingy (not sure exact name)? Im not doubting in any way, just throwing out possible options..if your'e nervous, def go to dealer, but here's another stab at it (again not questioning you)

-ABS check (normal) makes noise as you back out..loud pop (this is normal), sometimes ive gotten a loud pop

-you're a bit paranoid, so nervousness notices idle vibration (when cold, at low rpm, the car willl idle a bit rough, then calm down normally

-decide to rev the engine and her the popping, muffed sound- this is normal also when you rev at idle in the 5-7 range you'll hear this noise..mine does it too...

-this is just another possible take, in no way am i accusing you of false worrying- just a thought!
good luck

yes it did flood. the noise was the backfire of the fuel burning off in the exhaust

I concour. Light flood - but car started, so most likely no cat damage (did you park it the previous day before the engine fully warmed up?). The CEL would come on if a problem occured.
The 15-20 sec sounds like the AC compressor coming on - was AC on?
The new car has some special coating on the exhaust system - after driving, it will have some smell - nothing to worry about, will go away in few thousand miles. Or you drove it like it should be driven (given is out of break-in period) and the smell was from the hot tires :o)

Thanks for all the help guys and gals. im not sure if i was a flooding issue. but im sure im probally wrong. i mean i follow the whole shut off thing usually. i don't know im just agravated because mazda probally won't replace my pads. i can't deal with that squealing anymore. well the annoying part is that the squealed everytime to i broke. and then as soon as i pulled into mazda it stoped i mean nothing. no matter what i did. so i took the rental and hope for the best. anyways thanks again for the help

I found with mine if I lightly apply the brakes they will squeak. If I apply a bit more pressure to the brakes the squeak is gone. Try braking just a bit more aggressively just not enough to make the car behind you rear end you.

Was the smell like rotten eggs? Sounds like catalytic converter maybe clogged, which would be consistent with the exhaust popping.

well i find that when i break mor agressively i end up doing it about 2 cars before the point of stop and that just seems like im a bad driver. if i did it any further i would just end up stoping to early and end up breaking lightly up to the stoping point anyways. i mean i dont' know what you all's sound like but mine is loud... as for the smell... its not really like rotten eggs. i mean its a bit hard to discribe, it smells but not a stink. i don't know i guess i'll find out when i pic up the car. thanks again
