Sorry to hear that.
Funny thing is that I'm just about to do a search and I see this post. Well same thing here, my car wasn't working right too so I took the car to the dealership yesterday, and today they called me I need a new engine. Well it's still under warranty but they will be calling me again tomorrow to confirm after they talk to Mazda. Will see how it goes.

6k to fix it!!!
Wowsa....yeah, umm about that!
WTF? Out of warranty, and the engine goes. Man I would bitch. I truly hope, I pray that this does not happen to me. It would be the last Mazda I buy if it were me.
But, all the best and hopefully this gets fixed.

Did you get the engine integrity check recall done (4206F, see below)? Did you ever report/log low power or driveability complaints prior to the warranty being up?
They knew engines were going bad. Definitely push your case!!!

If you've been having issues before 60,000 miles then I would pitch a bitch. If this is a problem that started before 60,000 miles then they should warranty it period.
As was said before, they don't just fail instantly.
Push your case!

Especially seeing as these Rotaries are failing in numbers, both in and out of warranty. Not many have seen over 100,000 miles, and there is no indication when a motor will fail.
I'd say Mazda is approaching a class-action if they do not start honoring these Rotaries for more than the stated warranty.
I know motors can fail, and abuse may play a part, but when was the last time you heard a 4cyl. or 6cyl. engine fail, in these numbers, by ANY manufacturer, in the time period we see these motors failing??

Ed

Man, you guys are scaring me! I know that our engines have issues, but damn, I expect alot of miles on mine. What about all the stories about rotaries lasting past 250-300k miles before needing new apex seals? Are those days gone?

Mike: keep pressing the issue with Tustin Mazda. Use the recall as firepower...you might still get this covered.

Dealerships are sketchy
I just got my 8 in december and I'm already experiencing a small lack in power and response at 10k miles, it's almost like the engine struggles to get up to 5k RPMs, and when it does, it feels like it used to at 3k RPMs. Should I start a paper trail with the dealership? I've also been noticing a squeeky metal on metal noise right after the clutch engages and I accelerate. I told the dealership this at the oil change 2 weeks ago and they said they didn't hear anything, and that "rotaries do have a whine..." which is total crap because I drove an '04 rx8 to 45k miles and never heard a squeak like this, its almost like a dry metal on metal sound. I don't think I trust the dealership on any level right now... not after reading some of these posts...

Mike, wow, this is terrible to hear. I've been following your thread as something similiar happened to my 8. I was still under warranty, though, and got my 8 back last week from the dealer. He replaced the engine and so I didn't pay a dime.
Mazda has to be held accountable - have you tried contacting Mazda Corporate? Tell them there's an entire forum of angry 8 owners if they don't help you out.

dam people I don't have an eight yet but I got rid of three of my second gen's so i can get an 8 and i keep hearing about all these engine failures! All three of my engines had 150,000+ and I rebuilt one of them! Are people not taking the right precautions during the break- in period or maintnence!

Pedro: keep in mind that Mike's car is an early 04 automatic. Most of the newer 8's are not having as many problems.
Mike: putting in an rx-7 engine would probably cost you way more then paying for a rebuilt engine. Did you contact paul over at Mazmart? Give him a heads up that you MIGHT be in the market for an engine if Mazda doesn't come through

you guys do realize the car has only been on the market since 2003, simply too short of a time to have many 100k+ mile engines on the road yet right?
I really love the doom-and-gloom talk about the Renesis on here, engineering-wise it's pretty much superior to the last NA 13B in every single way, so I'd expect most properly driven Renesis engines to easily go over 100k in a few more years.
