?My invention: Best boost/CAN gauge ever on the OEM red LCD display.

not to hijack the thread, but as pieter3d kindly pointed out to me, the rx8 does not run on the same protocol as the 3. the 3 runs on whats called a controller area network or CAN-Bus. very popular and widely used in the auto industry (even in aerospace), and is slightly more complex than the SPI messaging protocol on the rx8. the CAN protocol also needs specific drivers ic's, and usb/serial development controllers for this are much more expensive to my knowledge.
Also I suspect the issue that some are having with other datalogging devices plugged in at the same time is that OBD-2 is command/response based, you can't have multiple devices polling the PCM.
What you can however have is any number of silent devices listening in on the CAN bus, although I believe this will not give you everything without requests.
As for costs, I bought an ELM327 based device off ebay for cheap, looking right now and I can get one for £9.99 delivered!
If you want to do something without a PC then an Arduino complete with CAN bus interface and LCD can be bought delivered for ~£80 (see 130494945001 as an example).
I would love to know about how to program the OEM screen, although I'd understand if pieter3d wants to keep that to himself.
