my odometer was rolled back, what should i do?
i picked my car up this morning after getting the starter/batter/plugs replaced and, like last time, the dealer reset my tripometer. i track my gas mileage and had taken a picture of the trip/odo when i dropped it off, so i pulled out my phone to compare and oddly enough there was one less mile on it than when i brought it in. i immeditaely turned around and questioned them about it, but got the standard 'it cant happen/i dont know how it happened/etc' response. i should have taken a pic of it immediately, but did take a picture w/1.1 on the trip and the same amt of miles on the odo so i have photo evidence of it. im not really suspecting anything deviant (the gas gauge was right about where i left it) but it doesnt sit right with me, especially as my trip was also reset last time. i called mna and they were no help, other than filing a complaint which i did not do.

The trip meter resets if you disconnect the battery for long enough. The odometer should never change. I've had my dash board out of the car for a day and it didn't loose the odometer miles. You can even see the odometer miles without the car on.... it's just not backlit.

see in the firt pic she has 187.6 on the trip with 30562 total miles
inthe second pic the trip has been reset and the car has travelled 1.1 miles but the toal is still 30562
this is what she is talking about.
kelly i can't see by the pics - is it possible we are looking at and comparing trip A to trip B instead of A to A? did you know there are 2 trips?

That is strange. Not about the trip odo reseting, but about the mileage not changing eventhough there is 1.1 miles on the rest trip odo. It should read 30563 or 30564 depending on how close you were to flipping, not 30562. I don't know what you should do. Probably won't make a difference anyway.

its the same trip and when i got the car it actually read 30561, i just didnt take the picture then like i should have. its not like the odo just didnt change for a mile, it was actually different than when i dropped it off. i turned around immediately and only put .3 on the car, but as i was pulling back into the bay it turned to 62.

yes, he's saying the odo read less than when he dropped it off.
drop off - 30562
pickup - 30561
the reason why the mileage is the same in the two pictures is because he didn't take the after-pickup picture of the odo until he had driven ~1 mile.

Rolling back the odo is a very serious offense. You could probably take it up with the state -- THEY would probably want to get to the bottom of it. Either someone is rolling it back or there is a defect; it's not acceptable to have inaccurate odometers. A shrug from Mazda isn't going to satisfy them.

there is a legal deviation from accuracy. since changes in tire size and tread ware and accuracy of speed sensors all play a part there has to be.
brian forget the trips
what was the mileage at drop off and what was the mileage at pickup.
does the mileage at drop off in your photo match what they say it was on the paperwork?

Brian/kellydrf has made it fairly clear the ODO at drop-off was 30,562 and the ODO at pick-up was 30,561.
That's not accuracy, that's going backwards.
I would expect there to be layers of security there that prevent even the Mazda service tech at dealership from casually tampering with the ODO.
The service techs at my local dealership couldn't even reprogram a new airbag unit without calling Mazda tech-support for step-by-step instructions and special codes. They also claimed they could not interrogate my car to determine if the driver's airbag had fired the reduced charge or a full-power inflation (not would not, could not).
It doesn't warrent panic-in-the-streets, but it does make me curious. How could such a thing happen? Is it possible the vehicle did not save the final update to the ODO to permanent memory before the battery was disconnected? If so, we ought to be able to duplicate that by driving a bit until the ODO increments, then disconnecting the battery as soon as possible. Might not happen every time, but might happen occassionally? Just a theory.

the paperwork said 30562 and the trip was at 0.0. when i pulled out the picture to get an accurate trip for mileage i noticed the odo was different, 30561. i drove immediately back and in that .3 mi it rolled over to 30562 (again.) i took the next picture with 1.1 on the trip to show i had more than a mile on it yet the odo still read the same as the previous picture.

Don't worry....be happy....
When you disconnect the battery, the trips can come back on showing any random number, but the odo is supposed to maintain its reading - who knows why it happened? maybe it just rounded down the invisible decimal it had in memory, or the "two" reading never made it to the rom to be kept forever.
I would definitely find something bigger to worry about......

yes but if its just a minor thing at this point, it may turn into a major thing later on. esp with odometer tampering being such a large offense. youd hate to have this knowledge, then when you turn around to sell yer car you get screwed for sumpin you thought was minor at the time.
i dont think its cause for panic, but def something to look into.

simply put- the techs have no way of effecting a change in the odometer. the only thing they can do is when replacing the can modules is "suck out" th einfo and drop it into the new module. but they can tmake any changes. its not possible. they only thing they could even do is make it 0 by accident.
ive checked all thru the service manuals and consulted someone else as well. the only thing it could be is soem kind of memory glitch as mentioned by others.
there isnt even a seperate check code for checking the odo
