My RX-8 is caughing??

Hey guys, I recently got my oil changed on my RX8 because I just bought it.. anyways...

It was bought on auction so I know the car is in super shape. I drove it, and I changed the oil to the recommended stuff in the owners manual 5W-20. I told them, put the best, they put synthetic, so fantastic for that.

The thing I noticed since then is that the car, when I rev up is fine, it revs down perfectly, BUT what Im noticing is that it coughs some what sequentially when it revs down. Nothing huge, its really like a miner puff, puff... puff, puff.....

Any ideas to what this might be?

PS, please tell me that everything is alright. It feels like someone of the family is in critical condition when I dont know whats happening with my car

Are the "puffs" coming from the exhaust?

Does it sound like popping? Youtube rx-8 aftermarket exhausts and see if the sound is similar to what you are hearing.

There is more gas in the exhaust than piston engines and the popping is it igniting in the muffler iirc. The popping is very common on aftermarket exhausts, I love hearing mine pop.

sounds normal to me. Mine has a small pop always at the same timing if i give the car a rev.

Most of us here use an oil weight higher than 5W-20 though. Read https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/lets-look-expo1s-over-100k-renesis-motor-138402/ for the reasons why.

normal....and u better research on some oil issues....some choose(including me) to NOT use synthetic but I believe ALMOST everyone uses a thicker oil cause the 5w20 mazda recommends is worthless....

you are going to be in trouble.

You can't just change the oil.

We have 2 quarts tied up in the oil coolers.
You have to drain those. You now have a mix of regualr oil and synthec oil

Hell, I did the same thing a couple of years ago. Castrol GTX 5w20 to RP 5w30. Didn't bother to drain the oil coolers.

My '8 has been running fine.
