Need a little help...

I have found the source of my door rattle when I am closing the door and it is the painted section of the side mirror. There is a screw on the underside of the mirror housing and I was wondering does anyone know if this holds the painted part on? Does anyone have any repair manual diagrams? Would be greatful for any help that can be given.

What I plan to do is, after finding out how it comes apart (without breaking it) put a little but of soft 2-sided tape or something around the edges inside so it doesn't rattle when you close the door. I will let you all know if it works, once I figure out how to dismantle it.

I checked the shop manual and the screw you mention is not shown in the diagrams. On some of the non-US cars there is a courtesy light installed on the bottom of the mirrors. The screw may be associated with that light assembly.

If the car is still under warranty, I would advise you to take it to a dealer for repairs.

Thanks, I knew someone would come through and be able to give a little guidence. The forum is the best at helping.

Yea I think they are willing to order a new one, but I was just going to see if there was another alternative.

I also checked the parts manual and the mirror assembly is not broken down to that level. Maybe someone on here has actually disassembled one and can answer your question.

Thanks again, yea the screw doesn't do a damn thing. I guess the painted part just pops off, but don't want to break it. I am just going to let the dealer replace it. By the way, how does the whole mirror assembly come off the door, from behind the tweeter?

See the attached page from the shop manual. That will give you an idea of what's involved in removing the mirror. Obviously, it's more involved than one might think.

Holy-cow, did not realize you had to take the door trim off, that is crazy. I am not sure I want them to replace it, the door is bound to rattle if they do all that.

Yeah, looks like the power connector is behind the door panel. I wouldn't worry about the dealer removing the panel. It's not really a big deal and even if a rattle in the door does develop afterwards, they will have to fix it. But, I know where you're coming from. Sometimes it's better to live with and ignore a minor problem than to attempt to fix it and create a bigger problem.

well an update, my dealer is pretty damn good, they ordered just the painted part of the mirror for me without me asking, and they are going to pop it on for me today I hope. They said that the painted part just snaps on, so the whole mirror doesn't have to come off.

Just for reference if anyone else has this same issue, they did replace just the painted shell of the driver's side mirror and it no longer rattles when you close the door. The part number on the warranty reciept is F151-69-1A7-PZ, but remember that is for my black car, I am sure they have them for all colors.
