need to replace alternator. help!!

Just got the car home from 2004 home from the dealer and had the battery die on me, i took it to auto zone for a test and found out my alternator is putting out only 49 amps. i was wondering if anyone had already replaced theirs or if anyone could tell me how hard of a job it is. thanks a lot for any help.

I wouldn't necessarily purchase a new alternator based on an AutoZone test. If you're still under warranty, have the dealer check it out. Otherwise, have it checked out by a reputable shop. Failing alternators is not something being reported on the forum, so be skeptical of the AutoZone test.

Also, if the car has the original OEM battery, it is completely inadequate for this car. Mazda replaced the early original batteries in many cars under a service bulletin at their expense.

the main reason i thought it was the alternator is because it killed the second battery i bought for it. it wont hold charge overnight, and when i drove the car after a fresh battery and charge the car ran fine for a while and then my electronic assists would cut out (ie power steering, dsc, abs, etc.) its not under warranty.
thanks a lot for the help so far guys, any more suggestions on my symptoms would be greatly appreciated

IS not hard at ALL

You do need a Torque wrench, and the right socket. it takes about hmm I think maybe 1 hour of time the most to do it.

Basically speaking u have to loose couple of bolts and u can slide the whole Alternator out.
