new engine or refurb??

Hey guys,
been reading awhile learning about the car.
I bought a 'non-running' RX8 with 118k on the clock. The plan was to swop out the engine for a running one.
I have been digging around both the car and the forums, im not so sure this is the best option now.
The car has a damaged radiator, last owner hit a rabbit. So i guess it siezed up through overheating. Not got much info as the previous owner didnt speak much english.

Just not sure which route to take at this point. I am quite mechanical, but new to rotarys, mainly working on motorbikes. So a rebuild seems pretty daunting but not impossible.

What are peoples thoughts?

Thanks for any help.

Hey Mark,

Welcome to the forums
rebuilding it isn't out of the question but I will warn you, it's not as easy as some people think.
you should send a PM to Mazmart (he's a forum vendor, you can find his subforum on the home page) Those guys are awesome with rebuilds and he might be able to just ship one out to you.

As far as the radiator, you can order an OEM one. www.onlinemazdaparts.com
where do you live? If it's a really hot environment, you might look at an upgraded radiator.

Thanks for the reply.
Im abit far for postage, im in the UK. So no aint that warm here either lol..
What makes the rebuild difficult?
I was likiing this option more because i could customise the engine more. Not really aiming to tune, but to improve reliability and just really get the best from it where i can.

here's a thread that talks a little bit about trying to rebuild an engine on your own: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/diy-request-rebuild-renesis-engine-180393/

I think you might want to buy a Rebuild engine from one of our vendors here. Its probably much cheaper option, it also saves u a lot of time.

You might be able to get a used Radiator some junk yard for cheap. just a thought.
