New key/keyfob questions
Okay, so I've been on a kick lately to fix all the minor issues with my 2004 Rx8. Consider it a mid-life crises or something, who knows.
Anyway, here's my situation - I had a hornet remote starter installed back in 2006 I believe, I've since lost the keyfob for it. I've also lost all my regular Rx8 keys expect one.
What will be my cheapest option to
(a) have at least ONE backup key (I'm notorious for locking the key in my car while it's running) and
(b) have one working keyfob - I don't need it to use the remote start if I don't need to, it can just lock/unlock and I'll be content.
On the searches I did, everything mentioned having 2 keys in order to program your own, so I think I might be forced to go to the dealer to get (a) fixed. But as far as (b) goes I'm under the impression I could just swap out the main remote starter unit with a relatively new one that comes with a FOB.
I'm not picky on style key or FOB or switchblade or any of that noise, I just want it all to work. And it seems most key related posts here have woefully outdated links, appreciate any help.

Copied from my answer to you in the dumb questions thread:
With only 1 key, it is impossible to code a 2nd key to your car yourself. You HAVE to have dealer-level software. The dealer's prices are obviously absurd however. The cheapest method is to buy a key blank and a transmitter of the right FCC code from ebay (will run you around $20-30), then call around to locksmiths to see who has the Mazda key programming hardware/software. Most locksmiths only have 1 or 2 makes, but they all know each other, and usually the first one you call will direct you to the locksmith that has it. When I had a key added this way, it cost me another $20 at the locksmith, just under $50 total. It took him about 2 minutes total. Quite a bargain compared to the dealer price and completely reasonable.
