noobie question

im very interested int he rx-8's i liked the rx-7's but i liek the rx-8's better, i have alot of questions tho... since it's not a piston engine.. does it have all of the same parts as a regular piston engine would also.. i.e. Radiator, Oil Cooler, Oil pan, blah blah,
i know some will laugh at the question,b ut im serious. and also.. i heard that Rotary's love to be revved, and winding the gears (drivign redline in all gears) wont hurt the engine.. i find that hard to believe, or is it true, is the rotary really that great?
also.. if i were to get one.. i heard of the many issues with apex seal problems, and the engine over heating.. what would be some good things to do, after i get the car. i.e. get better apex seals, get a better oil cooler, radiator, etc..

thank you for your help

Yeah, the rotary is still an internal combustion engine, so yes, it has all those extra parts to keep it running. As for it loving being revved up, the best proof you can have is just taking a test drive. Besides it getting louder, the engine is so smooth that it's hard to tell that you've just gone up to 9k rpm. Believe me, just take a test drive, you'll thank me later.

There are no apex seal problems with this car. It was only a problem with some 3rd gen RX-7s, which had turbos. Without turbos the rotary engines seem to be very reliable.

Ive seen people completely bury the needle on RX7s and nothing comes of it. Basically with rotarys, the rotor just spins around. In a normal piston engine there are so many working parts redlineing on a regular basis causes more wear problems. Though the -8's have a that damned kill switch when you redline to far....at least I think they do or is just certain models?

Anyways, the engine has pretty much all of the same components: radiator, oil filter, spark plugs, injectors, oil pan, ECU, TCM/PCM, and all that junk. The 8's have a front mount oil cooler. There are two on the High Power models and one on the standard power. Pretty much the only thing different is the insides. The rotor takes place of the pistons and such. There is a post under " WHY 1.3 " that explains everything about the engine pretty good and there are lots of resources on the net that give information on the inner workings. It seems really complicated at first, but once it clicks, your good.

I have yet to see or hear of any apex seal problems on the -8's. The only thing I have heard is that before you shut it down your supposed to rev it up to like 4 grand for a couple of seconds to get the excess oil off the seals to prevent a buildup, but there is some debate about that. The apex seals on the 8's have been redesigned and are more reliable than the 3rd Gen RX7. So the seals arent an issue, unless you drop a turbo in it, then who knows.

The overheating was something more prone to the 3rd Gen RX7s, and that is no longer a major concern. A couple of people have posted that they have had coolant leaks, but its fair and in between.

As for the tuning mods/upgrades, thats a personal choice. Upgrades are always nice. There are always better parts out there that will make the car faster, louder, and give it longer life. Check the Performance board.
