O2 sensor

Had a check engine light the last 24 hours. By the time I got it to Mazda service today it went off on the way there.

They checked it out and told me the O2 sensor was bad. $347 with labor. They tell me it has to do with emissions, carbon, etc. Car seems to run like normal. I don't notice any issues. Seems proper O2 sensing would be essential to proper combustion within the engine, but I know little about it. Mazda didn't seem to know much either. So, do I need this replaced?

Thanks.

Here's your answer... It depends. Lol. No, seriously, it does.

If it's the rear O2 sensor, no. Your engine will run just fine with a bad rear O2 sensor. The purpose of the rear sensor, basically, is to measure the efficiency of the catalytic converter. It doesn't affect the operation of your engine.

If it's the front O2 sensor, yes, it needs to be replaced and it will affect proper, efficient operation of your car. The front sensor is part of the feedback system when the ecu is operating in closed loop mode.

Hope that helps. Like I said, it depends. Good luck.

I would just buy a aftermarket one for now cheap it will do for now but having a check engine light on for that would be kinda annoying for me.

Cleaned up hostile posts.

jtmhjh, it's frustration you are seeing, frustration with seeing people asking questions for which the answers are easily found. If you are unwilling to read what we (as a community) posted before on the topic, we don't really expect you to read what we post now.

nycgps, reign in your city aggression a bit. Yes, it's frustrating, but it can be handled better.

Be civil guys.

i wouldn't assume that it is just because of the weather change. Poor assumptions are the difference between a dead engine and a well maintained one.

some dealers dont give a crap, while others will fed up when they see a sticker.

if i were u I will swap the wires back to stock before u go in, just to avoid all the commotions.

and is "catalytic" really that hard to spell ?
