Odd noise when changing gears???

I've done a few searches and found some threads on similiar problems, but Im not sure if any of them were the same thing im asking.

My question is: when I change gears from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, about 90% of the time I get this sort of clinking/buzzing sound. Its really faint, so I didnt notice at first. You can feel it more than hear it. I dont think its really a grind. Ive had my 8 for a few months now, and its the first MT car ive owned. So is this a normal sounnd? Or should I take it in? It doesnt make the noise when changing to any other dears. Is it just the mechanical noise of another gear engaging?

thanks

Mine just started doing this around 1k miles ago. I don't know if it's normal or not. I tried switching out the Gear Oil but it didn't help anything.

I'm going to try that Redline MT90 and see if that does anything now, it should be here tomorrow so I'll let you know

Sounds like it could be the throwout bearing, but that would likely be apparent when shifting to the other gears as well. Do you feel the "buzzing" when pressing the clutch with the transmission in neutral? Maybe just as you start to get a bit of resistance on the pedal?

Best to take the car to a dealer and have it checked out. That's what the warranty is for.

I believe it's the Syncro's spinning up then meshing into gear.

No buzzing when the car is in neutral while pressing the clutch. It mainly happens when im going from 2nd to 3rd, occasionally from 1st to 2nd. So if its the Syncro's spinning up then meshing into gear, that would make it normal? If so, isnt it odd it only does it beween two gears and not all the others? All others are like butter.

thanks for the suggestions.

This happen more when the car is cold? And also is the shifting still really smooth but just has a noise?

The noise happens regardless if the car is warm or cold. the shifting is not smooth when it happens, its almost like its being held up a little although I dont have to force it or anything. It does it no matter if I shift slow or quickly.

If the dealer is unable to "duplicate" your problem--which is likely--consider changing the oil in your transmission (and differential while you're at it) to a synthetic like Redline or Royal Purple. That may help with the noise and it will definitely improve shifting. There's a lengthy DIY on just that in the--you guessed it--DIY section.

Yes i push the clutch in all the way in. I think i have the timing down pretty good when I shift fast, so I dont think thats it.

"go drive another car" so that you can see if other RX8's have similiar behavior. If they do, you know yours is normal

Same kind of thing, but mine I think is a little smoother than your talking about. The shift from 2nd to 3rd only, and it is smooth, but makes a low pitched sound, it SOUNDS like gears moving, or meshing, or w/e but I really am new to this stuff.

I guess mine only does it when I shift between 3-4000 rpm's. I shift above 4 its smooth. Is that odd???

I don't think its your throw out bearing, throw out bearing sounds like rocks tumbling in your transmission. It doesn't sound like a buzzing sound, sorry. Could be something else, heat shield can make a buzzing sound if the its rubbing against the frame. The high vibration of the piece that is rubbing against the frame will cause a buzzing sound, especially under WOT. I would jack up the car to have a look,if not, take it to the dealer .

I'm looking through the manual and can't seem to find - throw out bearing. Is that the same as the pilot bearing?

No. See the attached images. The "clutch release collar" as shown in both drawings (#16-510 in the parts drawing) is what is commonly referred to as the throw-out bearing.

Mine has made that noise from the day IO drove it out of the showroom. Its the syncro... although it wouldnt kill you to have your throwout barring checked out at next servicing.
