oem coil
does anyone know if mazda has improved the oem ignition coils over its production life or are they still as bad as ever? im assuming the series 1 and 2s use the same maybe. What is the life on the BHR for comparison to the stock with a more well liked set?

It is believed that they have a couple of years ago. The part number has changed from the originals. Either way, you should expect to replace them after 30,000 miles to be safe. Especially if your at high rpms for any extended period.

I remember recently reading in an older thread that some suggested drilling holes into the plate the coils rest on in order to help cool the coils. Can anyone verify that this does in fact help with cooling the coils. I feel like if a mod like this actually worked it would be recommended more often and likely end up in a sticky

I don't get this...I know the documentation on these forums show the 8's needing early coil replacements. I have 80K on my '06 and it lives at red...5-10 times per day minimum. It runs like it's brand new and still hauls butt. Second set of plugs is it. Am I lucky? Dry Arizona maybe?

Oh could be. I planned on replacing them at 80k once that part of the warranty is over (some have lucked out and got coil replacement under the 80k warranty). I'm there right now...though I can tell you that if I have power loss it has to be under 5-10%. In every race against my son's S2000 we run neck and neck...well he always pulls away a tad on me. This tells me my 8 is still running great.

The warranty on the coils, in your case, is long gone. They are a consumable item. Mazda may cover them for 12 mo./12k miles. But, that's it.
I believe the warranty, you are referring to is the engine core warranty. That is for 8 yrs/100k miles. That doesn't cover the coils, water pump, alternator, intake parts or anything that is external to the center part of the engine.

I hope the new ones are good. Seems like my 09 is doing great im at almost 28k miles and plan on replacing the spark plugs soon. It seems like its fast enough and not losing power, but thats subjective I guess. Not sure how my coils are doing.

I haven't bought coils in a year or two but I feel like pricing has gone up. Can anyone give up-to-date tips on the best spots to get coils? Finish Line is nearly $50 now and I got my first set from them for around $30 a piece I think (that was OEM's obviously).
I've seen Advantage Auto parts with coils for under $30 but they're not OEM - not sure if they're any good...

I just replaced the coils in my 06 with the Standard Motor Parts ones for $30/each from Rock Auto. As far as I can tell, they are identical to the Mazda coils, just distributed by SMP. The coils themselves have the Mazda OEM part numbers on them and are the latest B version.
Hope this helps.

LS2 coils, the Yukon has a LS2 engine but with slightly different coils. They are not plug and play. You need a adapter cable for the signal, the plug wire is a little different and you need some way to secure it. Blackheloracing has a kit.

There has been revision but coils in a 07' die just as quick as they did in 04' so I am not sure what the revisions did. You can either get the BHR kit and not worry about replacing them anytime soon or get aftermarkets ones with a lifetime replacement warranty (O'Reilly's for example) and just replace them for free when they fail. I have the BHR kit.

I have just replaced my OEM with InterMotor branded ones. Exactly the same as OEM as far as I could tell when visually comparing old vs. new side by side, to the exception that the new ones are rev. "B". They were inexpensive also. I have been running on them for a few weeks now; all seems well.

I think you need the updated plate found on 09+ ... it should be able to help it cool off a bit more.
im going to grab those plates and see if it fits ... probably next week.
