OEM Intake Resonator - black hollow box....
Between the MAF sensor and intake box, along the intake hose there seems to be a hollow black plastic box (resonator) plugged into the intake piping.
Is this hollow box just for noise suppression or does it actually serve another purpose? Has anyone removed their resonator and plugged it with no ill effects?

go ahead, nothing happens. aftermarket intakes don't incorporate it, and neither are they trying to be quiet. it can't hurt.
i did it. instead of getting an aftermarket intake, u can save a lil money by modding ur stock ones. just don't try to be a genius and remove vacuum hoses...
it also doesn't hurt to mildly port and polish the throttle body =)
modding isn't always about how much $$$ u spend on parts u know?!

Hate to revive such an old thread but I can't find anything else - at least not that comes up when searching for intake resonators or boxes.
Has anyone else removed this and blocked off the opening? Did it make a difference? Also what did you use to cap it off?
I'm considering removing this resonator box along with my VFAD in an attempt to improve the sound of the stock intake setup.
EDIT: Found this thread too, but nobody seems to have posted what they did about it or what they found by capping it.

I'll add a bit of rational thought here. The resonator adds a couple HP according to Mazda. The VFad is only for sound supression. So removing the resonator can only hurt performace a little, if that's what you're after.

Where did you see this documented? I don't see how this resonator can add HP. Are you sure you are not confusing this with the description / function of the VDI (variable dynamic intake) valve?

You'll have to search, it's out there. Honestly I don't remember exactly where, but I don't forget either its intended effect. Bizarre $80 parts aren't typically for nothing. No I'm not confusing w/VFAD, Mazda simply wanted to minimize or perhaps tune intake noise. Read here .. http://www.racingbeat.com/mazda/perf...ke-system.html

I gave the 8 up, but the more any motor breathes the better for it. if your not willing to do exhaust and a remap on the ecu I wouldn't mess with the setup personally. If using an aftermarket intake be sure to read the instructions and disclaimers.

^There's more to an intake than 'more air'. Intake runner length and so resonance is important too. If it was just more air, intakes wouldn't really be needed at all...just have a big honking throttle body... yes?

Neither of your links refers to HP enhancement by the intake resonance chamber. It does appear to help modulate the intake pulse waves, but whether this results only in modulating the intake sound or also affects power output, I cannot find a definitive answer.
The VDI valve, on the other hand, DOES enhance upper range power by using intake pulses from one runner to help charge the intake on the other runner.

I didn't say VFAD. I said VDI. VERY different.
