Oil change interval

Oil change interval
Hi all
I have a 2005 RX8 which is in great condition and has only done 37000 k's
I had to oil and filter changed at 35000 k's as I like to do the changes every 5000k's.
The issue I have is that my car has only done 2000k's since it's last change which was 7 months ago. Is it imperative that I get the oil swapped out when it has only done 2000k's but it has been 7 months. I plan to get it done again soon, but was hoping to get to 40000 before I change it again.
I may still get it swapped out as Mazda say you should every 6 months. Any opinions on this issue? Is time really a major factor? i.e if I was to swap it out every 12 months would it make any real difference as the car is doing very few k's. When it does get out I do give the engine a good workout to help keep it happy.
Cheers

In North America, six months, 12000 km per schedule 1. Four months, 8000 km per schedule 2. I believe that in Europe the intervals are longer, probably because they tend to be greener and also oil costs more. Don't know what the book says down under.
IMHO, oil should be changed after six months even if the mileage is low. My wife only puts about 5000 miles a year on her car, and I always feel guilty when I let 8 or 10 months go before changing the oil. I really feel bad if I let it go a year.

I always go with every 3k-3.5k miles, but if your car just sits around for long periods I think it might be better to have it sitting there with some clean oil. Even after 2k the oil can start looking pretty dirty. I could be wrong and it might not matter but clean is always better.
