CA Oil change process

Hi to all you zoomers. Just purchased our first Rotary 2005 RX8 loaded, 22K miles, and what a ride! Its been so long since I have felt that way while driving (i mean zoooooming)!! Planning a road trip vacation in May, cant wait.

So I am servicing everything on the car as I have with any used I buy. Changed the oil and noticed that it still looked a bit dirty. Find out about the oil coolers and how much they hold. Any way to get more oil out of the system Process please.

Thanks for any feedback and I will be posting pics soon. Cant wait to go zooming again.

if you jack up one side or park half of it up on the curb while you do an oil change can help.
Just make sure you're using 5-30 or higher and you'll be safe.
The manual says 5-20 but most of us believe that is too thin of an oil for our car

if you really want to get it clean change the oil 3 times in 3k miles, the older oil will be thicker and settle in the pan so with each change you'll replace more and more of the old oil with new. do NOT do an engine oil flush.

just leave the drain plug out and put the hose in the oil fill. Run water through it for a few minutes and it'll clean that badboy right out! That's how Teknics does it...

haha, I'm JUST KIDDING. Please do not attempt that method as it will result in epic failure.

Buy several qt.s of oil and drain the oil. Add three qt.s. Run the car, drain again repeat till you are satisfied. Or as stated before change the oil every 1,000 miles for awhile.

Don't even bother....I took off the oil cooler lines, blew them out with compressed air...yada yada yada...new got more than an extra quart out.

Use good quality oil...and change it often...and you will be fine.

Thanks a bunch guys. Will use them all (except the hose method). Any thoughts on synthetic oil use. I know the manual says NO but Ive read that many are using it with no probs. Use in my other vehicles.

Jedi54, you say 5-30? not the 5-20 the manual says. Any particular brand? Like I said this is my first rotary. Castrol, Royal Purple, Valv?

Thanks again for the feedback.

What say you?

Royal Purple makes awesome stuff and synthetic is perfectly fine as long as you use a good synthetic. I had a chance to meet some of the engineers who built this car and that's pretty much what they said. (not all synthetics are equal)

I use Castrol GTX 5-30. I don't use synethetic motor oil since I change my oil out every 2500 miles or so, that would just make for expensive oil changes.

I use 5-20 every 3k religously and im fine, im sure 5-30 is good also. Make sure u keep an eye on the Antifreeze level! I once headed to vegas (summer 100+) and was low in antifreeze, had to stop and fill up. A K&N drop in will help also.

I am going to make the switch to synthetic. Engine, tranny and diff...
What are yours guys feelings about the switchover? Do I need to drain, fill, run it a bit... then drain and fill again to make sure all that dino oil is out? Should I change the filter during each subsequent drain and fill as well?

Was going to use the K&N gold filter too.
I was thinking Redline as I was big fan of redline from my motocycle days. I'd run Neo Synthetic but cant find anywhere here in LA that carries it. I know mazatrix carries it but im in Santa Monica and they are nto open weekends.. ie too much pain in *** to get out there on weekday.

I know makes for expensive oil changes but I do drive her REALLY hard....

When you're draining the oil, lower the jack just enough that it doesn't touch the drain pan to get most of the oil out.

You should zoooooooom with us Sunday the 26th, check out the Ventura page

I'd stick with royal purple because they have the only "we say great for rotary" page. Check my signature man. Easier argument if something happens then to say "Well I thought redline was good oil"

Oh and the switching question. No don't fill and drain fill and drain. When you add synthetic to dino you make.....blended synthetic. No harm no foul. Over time it'll dillute itself.
