oil trouble
just bought a "new" 09 Mazda rx-8 with <5k miles, when we drove it off the lot and brought it home it home and checked the oil, ya know routine stuff, and the oil, on the dipstick it, if you took the distance between the full and min cut it in half, that is about how far over the max line it was at, is that bad? and should i let some out?
anything you have to say is appreciated

There is a lot of oil threads popping out lately...lol
Did you do what RX8Soldier said? The oil should decrease, not increase. Anyway, it's funny if your car is not losing oil like most or all of us do.

It should be okay. If no white smoke or rough idle you're fine. I had the same thing happen to me recently after getting a oil change. If it bothers you enough, go to the service department and talk directly with the service manager. Tell them your story and ask if they can drain it down and put the correct amount.

The range between min & max on the dipstick is about 2 quarts, so it sounds like the motor is about a quart overfilled. I don't know about anyone else, but I would not feel comfortable with this. I would take it back to the dealer and have them correct it.

Yes, it's overfilled.
In my opinion I would let some out, but you don't really have to do so given how much we think it is overfilled.
What can happen with overfilling is that along with some other things(blow back) oil can get back into the airbox and soak the air filter. it can also gum up the throttle plate over time, so this isn't a good situation.
I would have your dad or yourself..............take a look at the air filter and make sure it's not soaked or there is no pooling of oil in the box. Then I would at least call the dealer and tell him that your car was overfilled and perhaps they need show their techs how to properly put oil in a f'ing car.
Yes, this car will use oil(by design), so check your oil about every two gas fillups and don't overfill it.

I have never had a shop change oil without them overfilling it. Every car I've ever had, every change.
The dipstick reading is not linear. That overfill is less than a quart. Been meaning to measure just how much is involved for the consistent overfill my dealer does...one of these days. But it's definitely less than what you'd figure by extrapolating from the marks.
