OMG I need assistance from a man immediately!
Thank you for looking at my thread - I appreciate it!
I thought I had a simple misfire in that my rev's seemed delayed and my power is some what ledd then normal.
I took my baby to a local garage and they have frightened me to death telling me my rotary engine tips my have eroded and I need to visit a local Mazda dealer for a diagnostic check ASAP....only downside is they can't get me in until 12th Sept
Any idea's???? Car has done 44k miles and is very clean xxxxxxx

Interesting that you believe gender specific help is needed.

The short answer is that it certainly is possible that it's your engine, but it's more likely that you are just 14,000 miles overdue for an ignition replacement (coils, plugs, and wires).
The question becomes, how much are you willing to learn how to do yourself? (it's REALLY easy). If you aren't willing, how rich are you to pay through the nose to have a dealer do it? (it's REALLY expensive if you pay them to do it)

Okay okay that was a little Damsel in distress....
Thank you so much for your Yoda like knowledge of the RX8s and yes...I am clearly a novice!
Only owned the girl for 6 months so alongside crazy working hours have only been learning as I go!
I have just had a chat with a Mazda dealer mechanic and he wold put money on the coil packs and spark plugs as you say so fingers crossed it's that.
Why in Sam Hill did the other garage start mentioning engine tips? Probably lack of knowledge similar to me.

I don't see a location on where in the world/country you are located. I'd highly recommend getting some local help to show you how to replace the ignition bits. Total coils/wires/plugs will run you a bit less than $300 if you buy them yourself from a non-dealer source and do the labor yourself/with help. Having a dealer do it will probably cost you $600 to $1,100, depending on how much they screw you.
And it's REALLY REALLY easy.
And yes, most mechanics don't know anything about the engine. Or if they do, it's all bad information or rumor. Most Mazda mechanics are the same, but they have a slightly better chance at knowing what they are talking about. The one you talked to seems like he might understand it.

Note: If you go to a shop and they refer to the apex seals of a rotary engine as "engine tips", they have no idea what they are talking about and you should turn around and walk out.
Anyway, as everyone else has said the first thing would be to do the ignition system. Next I would look into the Catalytic Converter, then a Compression Test.

I guess it's descriptive of the location, but my point is that the shop obviously doesn't have experience with rotary engines and is not the type of place I would want working on my car. Like you said though atleast they referred her to a dealer who should have someone with the knowledge to fix her problem.

IF (and only if) it is actually the engine and not just the ignition (which isn't covered under the 100k engine warranty), and IF she miraculously disappeared from the UK and appeared in the US where they extended the warranty.

Thank you so much for all your replies and suggestions and I have now booked the car into a recommended garage that do understand the RX8 engines and have carried out Coil pack and plug work previously!
By the way, I live in Plymouth, Devon (UK)
....and I would like to think my accent is worth it......Ha ha
