Plug wire came off & cost me $874.00

I was travelling on interstate 95 in NC when my rx8 starting running bad but I decided to drive on to next exit. I started smelling something burning before I got to exit but got off and checked engine and found top plug wire to rear rotor was off. I called Mazda and they told me engine was probably worped and catalytic converter was stopped up. I had it towed to Fayettville where they replaced two rear plugs and two ignition coils and performed air fuel induction svc. Total price including towing was $874.00 of which $450 was labor. They didn't replace spark plug wires. I love my car but you better stop quickly if you feel it skip. I got to buy plug wires before they come off again. I thought mazda would have since that caused problem to begin with. Just venting.

WTF 874$ for what?! Inspecting the f'ing car? Dude.... you got ripped off. 2 coils and 2 spark plugs are worth a total 100$. Coils take like 10mins to replace and spark plugs too.

Go back to them and yell at them man.

Wait how much was the towing fee? 150$?

All that, and the motor was probably still under warranty...

Shouldnt have cost you anything, not even for the tow... How many miles on your car?

Aaa

Morning folks. I purchased the triple A plus for $69, effective 09/03/2009. I'm not buying back extened service plan tho. Mazda said engine was covered until it had 100,000 miles on it and I'm only up to 66,000. It's the only car i've had that would run 140mph stock. Still love it.

Well, it is kinda late to do this now, but you should have asked why you needed those things and what caused them to fail...

The whole motor is under warranty, but items like plugs and coils are considered routine maitenance UNLESS there is a known problem that causes a failure...

The extended warranty does come with Mazda roadside assistance, so next time call them and they will come tow you for free.

The diagnostics fee is inflated as hell, but unless you take it to the shop already knowing what is wrong, not much you can do...

You are probably about due for plugs and coils, but unless there was a direct problem with them (and you would have noticed something beforehand) they were most likely fine, they just knew they could get away with this.

The shop supplies doesnt make much sense to me...

All in all, I think they pulled a swift one on you.

Its called "Short Block"

and short block does not include a lot of stuff. check it.

The extended warranty does come with Mazda roadside assistance, so next time call them and they will come tow you for free.
Unless you're talking about the "PAY TO EXTEND EXTENDED WARRANTY"

other than that.

Try it, and they will charge you for it.

Its called "learn"

Read the shop manual and you can solve 90%+ of the problems yourself. assume you have the right tools of course

They came and towed me for free

I bought the car used, and the first time I had a problem I called them and they sent someone right out to me. They actually sent two trucks, never saw a reciept, bill, or was even asked how I was going to pay.

putting plug wire back on

I did try putting plug wire back on but when I cranked it, it was still running on one rotor. The burning smell must have been the coils. If a plug wire comes off coils must burn up. Mazda said if you keep driving it cloggs up caltalytic convertor so i'm lucky I didn't have to replace it. I'm a hard learner. I've had it towed four other times while under warranty for not starting. Once I started it and backed up to get to lawn mower out and switched off. Had to call tow truck. I found out you have to let it run awhile.

So that means you never replaced your coils before ?

for the record, your coils wont "burn out" just because your plug wire falls off.

I might have a super Rx-8, I mean really it never flood. even I just crank it to move like 2 feet then shut it off. on a dead cold day too (25 degrees)

Dont think it was luck, maybe most people just dont try it.

If the batt ran out of juice it wouldnt have started back up at all.

I am unsure what would have caused that, any other symptoms that came along with the sputtering?

LOL! I guess everyone expects dealers not to make a profit and do only charity work. If yall only knew what it really cost to run a dealership.

sja31734 sorry for your miss fortune. It's not like you could push your car all the way to your house, do the necessary research, and fix it yourself like most posters here can do to save a buck.
