After 7 Years It starts tonight!
My son has now became all grown up and got his license. He wants a car, and he doesn't just want any car. He wants to get my 8 back up and running.
What father wouldn't want to share something like that with his son - A project that will create memories, bond, and provide experience to the young one that will last forever?
So we towed the 8 from where it was stored to my garage and began preparing for the project that we code named "Bad *** RX-8".
This project will include:
Complete engine rebuild:
Motor will be taken out and disassembled.
We will asses the amount of damage and then order the necessary replacement parts.
Spark plugs cooling mod applied
Street porting
Install new clutch
Install a set of BHR ignition coils
1000cc Primary injectors
Rebuilt the turbo:
New turbo manifold and downpipe (Built from scratch as always )
Reconfigure intercooler tubing
Relocate the battery
New HDI-EBC-R Electronic Boost controller
2x 12' fans will be strapped on the intercooler for better charge cooling at low (street) speeds
New Exhaust:
Haven't decided yet on which one to go with, but it's coming
And probably more cool mods as we progress along...
Media: (Hurry up subscribe, Like, follow, bookmark and share)
Project progress will be video documented and videos will be posted onto my youtube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/rotorrocks
How much do you think, your project, will cost in total !?
So far I spent give or take 2000 on tools, exhaust, BHR coils, Clutch, Boost controller and other things.
Now that we pulled the motor and took it apart i found it to be a huge bust.
Rear rotor even though it appears intact has the side seals seized in. Thrust bearings are trashed, so is the pressure plate, bearings are destroyed, I may need to replace the rear housing.. i don't know. I have not done full damage assessment yet but it appears that motor has overheated and seized. but I may need to drop another 1500 if not more on replacement parts. We are taking the time with it. I want to do it right, so there is no rush.
I agree with fullboost, not many kids these days get any kind of mechanical knowledge or quality time with their parents. Seriously good job.
Keep up the good work.
Travis
Thanks guys.
Appreciate the good words!
Sorry for not posting anything in a while.
We had a major set back in the build.
After the engine was pulled and taken apart, I found that the thrust bearing was completely annihilated and the motor seized. A complete mess. Shavings everywhere, journal bearings destroyed, the thrust flange is literally fused into the shaft and i can't even take it off.
Long story short, We had to backstep and wait to put together finance for a replacement motor, which I just ordered from OjImports today. The engine will be a custom build with street porting and RA apex seals for a little more resistance to a ping.
Once it comes in, I will resume the posts and the vlog, so stay tuned!
