Question about CEL with cat delete
I have a question about using a gutted cat in place of a clogged cat, which I will be doing very soon. If I get the CEL for doing that, what is the work around for that to be able to pass emissions? Do I need the cobb to mask it or something? I read a few post regarding this and I'm seeing mixed things about it. Saw a few people say they get no CEL for running a gutted cat, some say they do. Some mask the CEL with the cobb. What's the definitive answer on this?

1) If your jurisdiction does not have OBD2 inspection, none of the below will apply (My PA county doesn't test at all, so it doesn't matter for me, CA has a sniffer test that this won't work for... two examples.)
2) You may or may not get a CEL. People that do not get a CEL typically don't get it for weeks, possibly months, but eventually do get it.
3) You can't 'fool' the ECU with tricks or anti-foulers, it has a series of complicated tests to ensure that everything is working properly, and it can tell if the O2 sensors are being messed with. You won't get P0420, but you will get other codes instead.
4) The only way to properly prevent the CEL is to reflash the ECU with a different flash file that simply 'turns off' the ECU's ability to test for the presence of a cat (and or other emissions related tests if you wish). You can do this with either a COBB AP (2004-2008) or MazdaEdit (2004-2011).
