READ ME:Considering rebuilding your engine?
#76
Hi guys, looking to replace my rx8 192 engine, like for like, but doing it on my own plus neighbour to help. Is there anything i should be mindful of?
I'm buying an engine without ancillaries as will be using mine. I presume the key will need to be programmed and the ecu before the car starts.
Any effort will be appreciated
Reginald.

I’ve heard irons and housings can be resurfaced or refinished or something for cheaper than new ones but I haven’t had a chance to look into it, has anyone else had experience with this?

actually I believe if you are keeping all the auxiliaries from your old car, everything should work fine because the electrical parts will all still match. You will only need to reprogram if you get a different ecu, key, keyless entry module, ignition switch or one of the other programmed systems. If the seals were all that was bad on the old engine and the electrical stuff was working fine it should be able to handle the better operating conditions so long as you disconnect the battery for it to reset which is obviously necessary anyway.

Looking for technical opinions. I'm rebuilding a Renesis S1 ('04 4-port AT). My housings look beautiful EXCEPT (why is there always an 'except'?) there is one spot of flaking on each one. On each one, the flake has come off just before the separation of the exhaust and the intake sections, about 3cm before the 'bump'. This is the worst of the two - it's about 8mm long and goes in about 5mm. I have already smoothed it out since taking the picture, although there is still the definite line at the break point.
Can I use this? I already know I shouldn't, but given that it's not at a high compression area, what can I expect if I DO use it?

I’m not a believer in refinished housings, especially given how those look. Seems a penny wise and a dollar foolish to not just do the right thing if it’s your intention to try and get a full new engine life out of it, but it’s your effort, engine, and money.
The configuration of the Renesis engine is much more dependent on good rotor sealing that the previous 13B engines. Been expounding on that some recently, but am not sure many people are getting a full grasp of the details and implications relative to the various issues and results that are directly manifest because of it.
Of course various companies and individuals with extensive 13B experience automatically assume they are then equally Renesis experts too. The fail only begins from there

luckily the donor engine I bought had warranty.. and they honored it too!
It's hard to find an engine, let alone one that is compression tested...
