Sounds like you aren't having fun.

For giggles, I counted the number of full wide open throttle red-line beep hits I did on just the 15 mile commute home today...

1st gear - 10
2nd gear - 5
3rd gear - 3

I have winter tires on, so I try to keep it to double digit speeds. With summers, I often have one 4th as well.

I don't know how many I did this morning on the way to work. Probably a few more, due to lane and light differences.

Sure I waste some extra gas. But then, my wife wastes money going to the movies and out with friends too. She wastes more there than I do on gas.
HAHAHA that is awesome. I am always easy on the gas pedal fearing the wrath of the wife when the gas card bill comes. You make a VERY valid point here! All those damn shoes she buys definitely evens things out.

Now seriously though... I understand the reasoning behind redlining "at least" once a day... but 18 times in 15 miles!? Is this engine really made for that!? If you say yes, I will be running my car much harder than I currently am.

The answer to that depends on if you understand what redlining the car does. And you'll find out that either shifting up or easing off will really make no difference after you redline.

I would say yes as long as you back off the rpm's for long enough to allow the tranny to cool down a bit.

Ermmm...if you are worried about cooling the tranny you should shift and get it into a lower output rpm range.

Not really. If you redline in say second gear and then cruise around 4k rpm you would be fine. I'm just more **** about things like that. Technically the tranny should be fine. People auto cross and stay in high rpms all the time.

Yes, the engine is really made for that. It loves it. I can feel it noticeably running and idling rougher if I let 2-3 days go by without a good wankle spanking (usually due to rain, snow, or unusually heavy traffic)

That being said, keep in mind that when I settle down to cruise (which is generally very quickly after a redline), I slide it in 6th (even down as low as 40mph), and am very gentle on the throttle during cruise. I rev-match downshift basically everywhere I go, though generally not into 1st above 25mph. For example, I'll cruise in 6th at 70, catch traffic, rev match down to 3rd briefly till I match their speed, drop it back to 6th. Clear traffic and if I am under ~55, I usually drop it into 3rd to pull back up to 70-80, then back to 6th.

I don't find the "excessive" shifting irritating or bothersome like so many reviewers do. It's fun, keeps me connected to the car, and 55,000 miles and counting, it clearly loves it. And I still get 18-20mpg driving like this

ppl do autox at high rpms all the time and it is fine...however going from 9.5K down to 4K by just lifting will not cool the tranny more than shifting into the another geer. So if you redline through 2nd and go to 4th, after putting it into 3rd so you don't screw the syncro...you will cool faster than just leaving it in 2nd.

Very nice! I am averaging around 17 mpg right now (mixed freeway and city) and redline MAYBE once a day. If I can drive my car like you do and get the same gas mileage I'll be stoked! Unfortunately right now I am not redlining at all since I am breaking in my new clutch for the 500 miles:-(

I don't mind shifting a ton either so I will probably enjoy my car a lot more after this discussion. Thanks for your input.
