Rotary Problemz
I currently own a 2004 rx-8 which has about 116,000 miles on it =\. No problems so far other than when the engine gets warm i have to put the car in neutral and rev the engine a little or it might kill on me, then take 5-10 minutes to start back up. Anyone else out there have a problem like this that might be able to help? I've checked other forums but all i've seen is "i brought it to mazda and it was under warranty so they swapped out the engine blah blah". Thanks.

If I were you, I'd have the coils checked. When they get weak, they get very temperature sensitive.
Is your car showing any check engine lights/codes?
How long has it been since it's been worked on/maintained? Have the plugs been changed? They may also need to be changed.
Is the restart problem due to flooding, or is there some other symptom that is recognizable? Why does it take so long to restart, and what steps are you going through to re-start it? This would help narrow the list of possible causes.

I agree, this is almost certaily a coil or plug issue. Neither of these is extremely expensive to replace, so I'd change them out individually (probably the plugs first if you have never had them changed) and see if it makes a difference. That's a lot of miles for an '04. Mine's an '04 as well and I only have 41k.

So urber you have 116k mile on your car, are you the original owner? Please share your experiences with any issues you had with the Rx-8 over the years.
How do you drive your car? I'm wondering if it could be a carbon build up issue. I would also agree to have the plugs and coil changed and maybe the spark plug wires.
Also I see you are in New Orleans, I grew up in Luling, do you know where that is?

I don't think it is your coils or plugs, although changing them would not be a bad idea. I say this because I have some severe drivability issues as well that sound like what you are experiencing. Mine started at about 45k miles and I am at about 65k. My car has never cut off or thrown a CEL other than a gas cap code but when it happens it runs sluggish and gets really loud and the idle jumps all over the place when stopped at a red light. The acceleration goes to crap along with the gas mileage. I believe it may have something to do with the MAF but I haven't changed it out yet to see. I just bought the Mazport cooling mod to see it this could be a heat soak issue and hopefully it will take care of it. I took mine to the dealer and they said that my coils and plugs were within spec which I confirmed and that it was caused by bad gas. They told me to use QT which I did for about a month before the problem came back on QT gas. Sorry, I am just rambling on but I am trying to do this at work.

thanks guys for everything, i bought the car from a dealer at around 110k, i get no check engine lights or anything else like that. ive learned that if and after it kills i pull over on the side of the road and wait 5 minutes, if not, it gets close to starting but doesnt. also just yesterday, after restarting from a kill, i went through gears 1-3 fine but when i got to 4th and tried to accelerate more or floor it, it didnt downshift and take off but it went really sluggish on me. yeah hotsauce, ive lived in st rose all my life so of course i know of luling .

sounds like the coils, i think they're around 30 bucks a piece so it should be a cheap fix.
on another note, if you have 116k on the original engine thats the highest i've heard of here on the forum.

yea...you should have known before getting into the whole "RX8 ROTARY SCENE" before you bought the car. Rotary engines are highly unstable, and if you do not warm them up properly, will result in catastrophic failures..I should know. I've owned rx8, rx7 fd and fc. Out of all those 3, I choose none, I'd rather drive my honda civic....pistons ftw.

as to ubermike.. no cred. shot a photo. you claim to have got a car used with more mile on it than someone here... not likely...
