VA Rough Idle.

What does a rough idle mean? I have 29,000 miles on my 2004. Could I need new coils and spark plugs? How often are you supposed to replace them?

could be:

1. plugs
2. coils
3. wires
4. cat
5. bad gas
6. clogged sock
7. bad MAF

some people replace plugs every 20k, some replace coils every 20-25k. Some people go 50k or more with plugs and coils.

I'm taking it to the dealership on monday. I told them it has a really rough idle, and another problem with the transmission being crunchy when cold...... almost like its grinding before it goes into gear.

AT or MT? Could be a bad engine mount.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but I have a similar issue. 2004 AT, 39k miles.

in December '08, weeks before my warranty runs out, I complained of a rough idle when in Drive and Reverse. The car shakes pretty violently in reverse, and in D when stopped it feels like a 20 yr old car, not a modern one. They did a flash, thinking it was a rough idle problem.

The problem didn't go away.

After doing some research and finding the TSB for engine mounts, I believe that is my problem. I took the car in a week ago, and they're saying it's out of warranty now and will cost $800 to replace. ?!?!

The local dealership has it documented that this problem occurred before December 31, 2008 (car was purchased Dec. 31, 2003). We have a 5 year warranty with the extension, right?

What can I do? This smells like BS to me. The dealership isn't giving me a hard time, he's waiting to hear back from Mazda HQ if they will do the work under warranty or not, but it's been a few weeks now. I don't think I'm going to get a call back.

mines not quite as bad as you all are describing. I think i am to critical of the car at times. I always want my stuff to work perfectly. I think the rx8 vibrates a little hard in general so maybe you all have an actual problem and im just creating mine in my head. if you have the extended warrenty i know mine is $100 deductible.

try the free stuff first. remove the plugs and inspect them for wear. remove the coils and inspect and test per fsm. thats a good start before taking the car into the dealer. if you remove those parts and are unsure about their condition, post a pic here and we'll take a look at them and help determine the problem.

I myself have an 04 A/T and I have an extended warranty but figured I'd just do the work myself. I bought the right side motor mount and replaced it in like 30 mins. I did plugs, wires, coils and motor mount last week. Completely different car now. The mount was the most noticable. The mount was $126. Hell if you were near me, I'd help ya, no charge.

An update: I just got a call from the dealership. MNAO agreed to give me the new mounts under warranty, but I still have to pay the dealership for labor, quoted @ $160.

I wonder if I can grab the parts and do it myself? Haha!

You said you took it in to the dealership on Mon - what was the outcome? I hope they still don't have it!

the dealer pretty much said nothing was wrong with the car when, even when i printed out the service bulletins about the clutch squeaking and the airbag rattle, and the engine vibration was supposedly "the nature of the beast"

I may be heading towards charlottsville in the next couple weeks. Maybe we can meet up and compare the vibration?
