The recommended oil change period for euro spec cars as per manual is 12,000 miles (20,000 Km).
The manual also advises to use mineral oil but doesn't prohibit the use of synthetic.
Mazda dealers sell Mazda/Dexalia labeled quart bottles (5w30) for an outrageus $20!
I can get a fullsyn Castrol RS 10w60 for less (which I use in my GT)!!!
So financially using synthetic brand oil is cheaper than getting the oil from mazda. Moreover 5w30 mineral oil is impossible to come by any other way.
So it seems synthetic will be the way to go for me!

When it comes to engine oils, asking Mazda which is best is basically the old problem of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. They keep changing their views depending on who you ask at Mazda. It looks like this is something we're going to have Koby at Sevenstock. If the head of the rotary engine program for years can't give us an answer, no one will. Keep in mind that Mazda runs synthetic in all of their race cars. Many others have used synthetics with no problems including myself.

Idemitsu (a long time mazda racing partner) is releasing their synthetic rotary oil to the US. Its 10w40 Synthetic that has been used on rotary engines for years. These guys know rotary btw. They designed the Synthetic oils for the 787B.

I should have written it down. I was so honored just to shake Koby's hand that I forgot to ask. Racing Beat does endorse and sell Royal Purple though.

Actually if you picked up the Racing Beat catalog they also mentioned that they use Amsoil. The only 2 synthetics they use are Amsoil and Royal Purple. Those have also been the only 2 I have ever endorsed.

I don't know where to draw the line. I have run synthetics in cars after runnng them for years on regular oils. I've done it and many others have too. Use your best judgement.

From what I have read, I think it is ok as long as the quality of oil you are using is increasing. Like you could go from Castrol to Royal Purple, but then not back to Castrol. That is what I remember reading, I think at the Royal Purple website.

Synthetics are definitly recommended for racing applications, which most do not use a cat because it is off road or a closed course or outside the US.
I do not think we will ever hear the true reasons and we also must remember that the renesis is not the same engine as was used in the RX-2 - RX-7 and therefore could have different requirements for reasons we don't know.
Some will use RP. Some will use Dino. Some will forget to bother even checking it.
I would be interested in the dyno results though.

That's good, because the whole "synthetic doesn't burn as clean" thing is a myth. The 100,000 mile cat longevity issue also has nothing to do with any Mazda recommendation to not use synthetic....when Mazda started saying that, there WAS no such requirement. In fact, now that the requirement exists, Mazda has been rather inconsistent about those anti-synthetic statements, unlike in the past where they pretty consistently said not to use them.
