RX-8 Problems

Hey hows everyone doing, friend has an RX-8

its a 2004 model with 6 speed gearbox and 74,000km.

Recently its been having problems, well at first starting problems.

The computer read like 12 codes, got a tune-up done and replaced one of the coils from Mazda. Drove fine for a bit besides the occasional starting problems.

After sometime, the engine check light came on again.

It drove fine when that light came on but a few times it wouldnt pick up speed at all. It was like it lost all power and was moving like a turtle.

Exhaust was clipping a bit. Idle became really rough

If you stepped on the gas, the rpms would climb slowly. And when I say slow I mean slow. To the point where people would be like WTF is this dude moving 2 km and taking forever to cross the intersection

And finally it refuses to start. When you do try to start it, you hear a whining noise, sounds like the starter is spinning but the motor isnt cranking.

What could it be guys? Oh yea it burns alot of gas but im guessing that normal

60L gets around 480KM on a tank

Clogged cat?
Coils?
Spark Ignition?

Any noticeable leaks? Have you taken it to a Certified Mazda dealer?

Replacing all the coils and plugs would be the first step.

Probably a clogged cat. If your car isn't modified, let mazda warranty fix it.

First, verify that the engine compression is in the acceptible range. To do that, have it checked by a Mazda-trained tech using the correct tool. This could save you money in the long run. Parts replacement without knowing the cause of the problem is a waste of money and time.

First off, it will be nice if you can tell us what those "12 codes" were.

if one of the code has something to do with Ignition coil, then I suggest you to replace ALL coils and Plugs and maybe Plug Wires.

if that does not fix your problem, I'll start looking for engine compression numbers.

hey everyone its my rx8 that gksingh posted about. When i took it to the local Mazda dealer they said it has 12 codes but they didnt specify. I bought the car from a local private dealer and i guess whoever had the car before didn't take very good care of it and didn't get it serviced too often. What Mazda did was run a diagnostic(obviously) and said that they are gonna start with the most obviously problem. They ended up replacing all four spark plugs and wires and the #2 ignition coil. I just took the car today to a mechanic who specializes on rotary engines and hopefully he can fix this problem. I've had the car for one month and its been parked for half of it. Its fun to drive when it does run though

Hey guys would the coils going out have any direct relationship to having a midpipe on there? I wouldn't think so but that is why I am asking......Thanks

I'm experiencing some of the same problems. I had my 2nd gear fixed about a month ago and noticed that occasionally gears would click when shifting. about 2 weeks ago my fill plug (on the trans.) came out about 100 yrds away from my house. topped off the tranny fluid and put the plug back in. now i have noticed that when at idle below 1,000 RPM it has a unsetteling vibration and when revved above 1K it seems smooth. any advise?

I have a 2004, and had the same problem you mention, but sometimes it would go away and run fine. Every time I took to the dealer they couldn't find codes but would keep updating firmware for engine and transmission. That didn't help. One day when it did it again, drove it direct to the dealer and left it running. Even with Check Engine light on, and they still couldn't diagnose. They ended up calling Mazda Engineers. Mazda said they used to get this same problem on some of their Mazda 6's, but not in RX-8. They said the vehicle was going into "safe" mode to protect everything, but had the dealer change the fuel leveling pump. I'm no expert on design of the car, but I was told it has a split tank with a leveling pump. They changed that, and I've never had the problem again.
