that is what I had gathered so far and why I questioned the need for a 2nd thermostat....1 thing to consider is just a valve, leave it open 9months of the year and in the event it gets cold just close the valve :)...less likely to break too :lol2:

shadycrew31 06-27-2012 12:07 PM

Hmmm... I never see temps above 203... I have stock everything, minus the mazmart tstat.

houstonrx8er 06-27-2012 12:35 PM

is that on the Cobb?

yes....

Hoss-05's gets well above that and it's stock too. When I was bone stock I could get to 210-215F easily in traffic on the way home from work during the summer.

I get 180 on the highway cruising, I haven't driven much in traffic... I'll prolly get around 210.

That's about right at cruise, I'm at about 188-190F at cruise. I figure the turbo adds at least a few degrees to the overall temps.

houstonrx8er 06-27-2012 02:38 PM

yea 180-190 is norm for me but with 100+ deg weather and agressive driving current cooling wont cut it.

hoss -05 06-27-2012 02:41 PM

Yeah I think i need to clean out my rad and oil coolers. On a hot day like yesterday I was seeing 192 on the hwy at speed. My car will actually over heat if I have the AC on high and am sitting in stop and go traffic on the hwy.

houstonrx8er 06-27-2012 03:08 PM

yea, I wish I hadnt dropped the ball on that one and got my oil coolers cleaned.

olddragger 06-27-2012 03:13 PM

the thermostat is needed on this set up.it acts as a restrictor also. The heater hose coolant supply is huge. In it's oem config that coolant never goes to the radiator, it mixes with the coolant from the radiator at the thermostat housing--heating the cooled coolant back up!
If the heater hose flow is left without restriction in it--the water pump loses a little head pressure making it less efficent. At least that is what I think happens.
Fluid dyne makes a 180F in line thermostat that you can install and never have to worry about over cooling or seeing the coolant temps bouncing around.
I have a huge write up somewhere about my coolant system findings---yall have been ignoring me!!! :) True with my spelling you probably need a decoder ring to read it--but its there! Somewhere--I think.........

This is perfect :)

yep thats the one i got and used. Bingo........

houstonrx8er 06-27-2012 08:31 PM

I will look for your so called thread ;)...jk...I am absolutely not ignoring you.....just chasing you with a shot of whiskey :)

I think I remember to install the heater restrictor on my build but I did manage to leave out the one in the return line.... dumb-ass

9krpmrx8 06-27-2012 10:04 PM

Houston, let's get on that heat shield for the intakes.

houstonrx8er 06-27-2012 10:48 PM

I am actually thinking of driving my car to houston this weekend and my dad and I are going to play with Pro E so he can print me a mold on thier 3d printer at work.....gotta love HP engineers :)

I also saw a few sheets of Stainless Steel at work and it made me think of using galvanized as a practice run...just make it rough to work the bugs out then fad it from SS if the fiberglass doesnt work out. We can talk more Saturday morning at C&C

olddragger 06-28-2012 08:54 AM

Are yall thinking about thrying to heat shield the lim?
If so--i would just like to pass on that i have attempted to do that before and it really didnt work. I found out the reason. The LIM has a huge footprint where it is bolted onto the engine. I even tried one of those special gaskets that blocks heat transfer? I found out it was too think and it interfered with the apv opening. Sigh.......
.
It is good though to place a shield on the header ( dont wrap it) to help keep the engine bay temps down. I did that and it does help a little.
It is going to 103F here Saturday---damn!

No we are talking about a shield between the fan shrouds and the intake.

Are you not using the stock air box tray?

Next week I plan on building a custom one that goes all the way across from the fuse box to the ecu cause I plan on relocating the battery to the trunk. I'll be using aluminum sheet, I would stay away from Stainless Steel because of the added weight. If you guys don't have something working by next week let me know, I can send you over the dimensions of everything when it's done.

No I could cut it to work but it looks like shit. We want a tray that works exactly as you describe. Hoss-05 and I got the wire last night to relocate the battery to the trunk. Hopefully I can do that this weekend.

If I can talk my wife into me not going to houston we can work on that this weekend....the more I think about it the more I dont want to travel. Keep you posted

I may get the stuff to do the relocation as well, battery has to go, figure might as well strike while the iron is hot :)

Let me know if you want a hand sourcing parts.
