spare motor storage?

Well i have a second motor with low miles sitting here. I was wondering what the best way to store it would be. I already have the ports covered with tape and it covered with a tarp. I also have read putting oil in the spark plug holes and spinning the e shaft. Is there a certain weight or oil i should use? any other things i should do? I plan on having it torn apart and rebuilt in the future. I just do not want to loose parts that are good now.

Here's what I would do:
Get some thick plastic bags that will hold the whole engine. Might be hard to find, but they are essential. This needs to be a big airtight bag. Place the engine in it with the opening on top. If you plan on very LONG term storage double bag it.

Get some crystal cat litter. The pure crystal kind not the kind with the clay mixed. Take that and lay it in a baking pan and bake it for an hour at 250 degrees. Let it cool then put it in the bag with the engine.

Take the top of the bag and twist it into a single rope like section then tape it with one layer of duct tape all the way till it's covering the tail and then fold it in half and tape the outside again covering the tail.

The reason for all this is that the cat litter is actually silica gel a common desiccant when sealed in an airtight bag it will absorb all the water in the engine plus any that slips into the bag. You have to bake it first to dry it out because when it was at the packing plant it already absorbed a lot of moisture. This same trick works great for drying cell phones or other portable electronics after you remove the battery and rinse in DI water to remove whatever impurities were in the original liquid you soaked it in.

May not be the easiest method, but it's pretty much bullet proof.

BTW for anyone who noticed the J-seal method, FTN.

Some people won't bother lubing the rotor surfaces but its a good idea IMO. Climate controlled (heated & cooled) storage is best, but not absolutely necessary. i have seen the OE apex seal leave rust markings on the housing lining where they are left to sit for a long time and moisture is present in the air.

Pretty much any motor oil is ok, but some people prefer auto trans fluid

.

I just squrted some ATF ito the spark plug holes and turned the motor over till it was spread around....it also does a good job of softening the carbon deposits as well....
