The dealer (i bought my RX-8 a week ago) told me that there's a fuel cut-off at 9500 rpm. He also said there's some way to circumvent this (but didn't say how, because that definitely voids warranty). That's really what I would like to do.

Yes, that's why the A/T only has 197hp instead of 238. The automatic transmission is apparently a fragile component.

No there ISN'T! Why do people keep spreading these lies? The MT RX-8 (in North America) top speed is DRAG LIMITED, that's it.

Lots of people on this forum have broken 148mph.

You're kidding right? The fuel cutoff is there for a REASON - so you don't damage your engine and transmission.

There's alot of auto transmission BS in this thread....

The transmission is not weak. It's pretty much an FD auto transmission with updated electronic controls. It can handle 240hp easy. The reason the auto redlines lower is the torque converter. No one mass produces a converter that can handle a 9000rpm redline.

Top speed has nothing to do with the strength of the transmission or converter. There's more stress on them at redline in 1st than anywhere else.

There's really no logical reason for a top speed limiter on the auto 8 that I can think of. Besides, just based on power alone, it would probably be drag limited somewhere around 135 anyway. 3rd gear tops out at 122-123 mph indicated. I've never taken it past that so I can't personally verify the existance of a limiter, but others have said 125. Why yours stops lower than that, I'm at a loss. Unless your running wheels and tires with a significantly lower overall diameter or have swapped to a higher rear end ratio.

Done the searches...read the arguments...and call it what you will, my 05 Shinka tops at 120 mph. Slight down-hill on California-Nevada backroads...she hit 120 and then vroooommmm...that was it. My 99 Dodge Avenger did 117 mph before it got limited...00 Silverado hits 97 mph before it is limited.

Will my Shinka ever go faster?

Is this an AT? If not, you have a problem. If it's an AT, you have the "standard", 4-port engine, not the "high-power" 6-port, therefore, considerably less HP/power.

i've gotten mine to 167 on a flat florida road on a nice cold sunday night... it would probably go faster, but it was taking about 40+ seconds per mph... the road was disappearing kinda fast...

I actually believe you as I've seen the car hit over 180 on a Dyno and if the wind conditions were in your favor that seems plausable

Sorry...left that part out, she's a MT. I don't know if I'll ever get a chance to get that fast again, but I was a bit disappointed at the time that it cut out at 120.

Well, as I suggested, your car seems to have a problem and you should have it checked out while it is still under warranty. It could be an engine-compression issue which will only get worse with time. There have been some Renesis engines with this fatal problem. Most have been AT cars in hot-dry climates, but there also have been a few MT cars as well.

I checked my speedometer and odometer extensively with GPS and it is remarkably accurate. Not at those high speeds, though. This was at speeds up to 80 mph, and at the high end speeds, the difference was 1-2 mph.

haha very good point

although don't they still have some un-limited roads (during daylight) in Wyoming...can't hurt to pull that card

This sounds like your hitting the limit do to Drag. If the car has a govenor it will cut fuel for a few second and you will feel the car slow down fast and lose around 5-10mph then the fuel will kick back in and you will start accelerating, then hit the govenor lose 5-10mph then accelerate. ( <-- this is from every car I have ever driven that has a limiter, I guess the RX8 might be different because of the electronic throttle, but I don't see why.)

However if your Drag limited then the RPM will just stick where ever they are at and you will stop accelerating.

if it's drag, then something is wrong with the engine. Either that, or it has a BFW on it. There's absolutely no reason for the AT to be drag limited to 115mph (I've seen 122mph at the rev limit in 3rd).

The base AT may have a lower limiter, since I don't think it has Z rated tires on it, stock. I'm pretty sure that federal law requires a limiter (usually around 115mph) in such cases.

I had mine up around 125 and it did feel like it ran out of power. I have the 6MT and I tought what the ??? is going on here? Mine felt like I was loosing power. I was going through oil like it was water. I ran at that speed for a while running with a Mercedes out in New Mexico and with the loss of power and oil consuption. Is that normal?
