starting problems and high fuel consumption, help?!
I recently bought a 2005 rx8 and am having starting problems and the fuel consumption is excessively high! The car starts fine when the engine is cold, but when you turn the car off for a couple of mins and go to restart it, it wont! this is especially annoying in fuel stations Also the car is currently doing about 6mpg and is burning a major whole in my pocket! The car has recently had new spark plugs, new ht leads and a new battery, is this likely to be a compression problem? Any help would be great, im new to this site and am not much of a mechanic.

When you did the plugs did you do the coils? Both issues could very well be related to the coils. If the coils don't fix the issue then it is possible that carbon buildup causing compression issues.

I had the coils replaced at the same time. Im going to book it in for a compression test and will hopefully find if this is the problem, but if its not is there any chance it could be something to do with the starter motor?

Have you read any of the new owners threads as of yet?
If you haven't, you really should have done so before you bought the car.
But, you might as well read them now.

Hot start problems is almost ALWAYS low compression on the engine. The few exceptions is if your starter is REALLY badly failing and the heat soak is crippling it, or your fuel pump is failing and overheating, and you have to let it cool off first. But, if your cold start is relatively fine you can rule out the starter and if you shut off the car yourself with the key and it didn't just suddenly die, then you can rule out the fuel pump.
Go get a compression test.
