Angry Suspension Problem

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This just started last week. When I come to a full stop there is a rough sound that comes from the right rear of the car When I take off I hear it again. It doesn't do it when I coast slowly to a complete stop or when I take off like a grandma. I'm no expert but it seems it has to be the suspension since when I brake weight is taken off the rear and transferred to the front, vise versa when I take off. I've had the MS suspension in for about 4 months and have done 3 track days with no issues. I put the car on Rhino ramps checked the torque on all suspension bolts and also checked the ones in the trunk. Everything is tight, and everything looked OK under there. Not sure if this is normal or not? The only other thing I can think of is that I put in new rear brakes in a month ago. I did one track day with these with no issues. Any Ideas?

Did you have the same sound when you turn? If you checked everything is tight, it may not be the suspension. With your MS springs, I doubt the suspension moves enough to rub on stuff during normal use. I'd probably check the brake too, just to make sure nothing came loose. We've seen caliper bolt flew off before, haven't we I've had a bad shock tha makes noise, so if everything else check out fine, it could be that.

Better fix it quick, your next track day is coming up

put the rear up on jackstands, start the car and let it run in idle with the parking brake off. The rear tires should rotate, see if you can pinpoint the noise

Also check your exhaust hangers and the torque on your control arms you might have moved.

Thank you all for you input. It only does it when I'm braking right as I come to a complete stop so running it at idle on jack stands won't help me much. it also does it when I take off after stopping. It's more pronounced as I stop though. It does not do it when I turn. The only bolt we removed when I put in the rears was the one on the shock and the one for the camber. Since everything on the suspension looks fine and is torque I was thinking it could be a CV joint but in doing some research it says that a CV joint issue will make a noise as you turn. I'll check the brakes tonight but the sound it makes does not seem to be brake related. If this fails I'll have the dealer check it out next week. I feel as though the more I mod my car the more paranoid I become about every little sound it makes.

check your caliper and caliper support bolts

CV and differential would typically happen anytime the drivetrain is turning

So what you saying is that if it's only doing it when I'm braking hard its not a CV joint or wheel bearing? I'll check the brake bolts tonight. Thanks

Here you are saying it is more than a braking issue. It also happens when you accelerate hard.

I hear it a little when I take off, it doesn't have to be a hard take off though. The noise is just more pronounced when I brake. The only time it doesn't do it is when I brake very slowly and coast to a stop. I'm no expert but it doesn't sound like a noise the brake system would make. Regardless I'll check the rear calipers tonight. If the brakes look good I'll just have to take it to the dealer next week. I need to get this fixed before next weekend. It's times like these that I wish I would of helped my father when I was younger. He was always the family and block mechanic.

Well I lifted the rear and checked the calipers, suspension components and everything seemed to be right in place I guess it's time to take it to the pro's

Just got back from the dealer, he took it for a test drive and said the noise is the brake pads. He said that they move ever so slightly when I hit the brakes and that is what makes the noise. Since the pads I have are aftermarket (carbotechs) he said they may not fit perfect and may have some play, especially if I used the same clips from when I bought the car (which I did) He said that since they are aftermarket he can't fix the noise under warranty. He told me the best thing to do is for me to replace the clips with new ones, and re-grease the back of the pads. Guess I'll do that some time in the future.

so I was right? wow!

That's kind of odd though, I've always used the stock clips in the past and never had any problems.

I guess I'll see if the brakes are the issue, I'll grease them up add the new clips and see what happens. While I'm under there I'll also do the sway bar bushings.

I'm pretty sure it's not the brakes. I say this because I just finished changing out my front pads for this Sundays track day. I also changed out the clips in the rear. As I was jacking the car I heard the same damn sound that I hear when I brake. So, I'm guessing it is the suspension. I double checked evrything and it all is nice and tight. I have no clue.

It might help if you could describe the noise (hard to do I know). I just had a similar issue, under similiar circumstances, in my MPV that was sort of a clunk like banging two solid blocks of metal together. Took it to the dealer and it was worn pad clips. I'm going with the "pads may not fit perfect" theory. Maybe try stretching them out a bit?

Cool beans. I meant to say try stretching the clips out - not the pads. Maybe they'll seat better on the pads. That's what I get for typing on a Sat morning. Can't wait to hear the dual can muffler, I've been curious.
