Thermostat questions

The search function seems to be acting up, just times out for me. What is the minimum/optimum operating temperature for the Renesis, and what temp. thermostat does the 8 use? I know the ecu kicks the fan on at 190F, and my fan seems to run more often than I'd like (at least now that it's mid 80's low 90's, ideally i'd like to see the fan never turn on), 190F is too hot for any engine in my book.

The RX-8 has a 180deg thermostat. The two fans operate in parallel, both on or both off. They operate at two speeds, low or high. Low speed operation at 206deg, high speed at 213deg.

The fans will also operate at high speed if the A/C is on.

Cheers,
Gomez.

I called Mazda Motorsports about a cooler thermostat, they said the car already runs rich, a cooler temp would make it worse and you would lose power.

The wheather im having in my country is tropical climate all year round.
I thought the cooler the engine the better it runs?
Thinking of getting the 170deg thermostat....my engine room temp often gets too hot...and at one time burnt my fan relay when idling for nearly an hour...

Advice?

what you need is a flash that turns the fans on at a cooler temp

and there is one ! Rb's does that I am told(among other things)
I have also noticed that the fans coming on when you park is not really related to coolant temp. per gauge the coolant tempt can be 190F and if the ambient temp is low enough that you dont run the a/c then the fans dont come on when you park.
if the ambiet temps are high enough and you do run the a/c and then park the fans will come on. Now the interesting one is that if the ambiet temps are high ,--you run your a/c(recommended!)---but---if you turn off the a/c --say approx 1 mile from where you are going to park --then the fans do not come on after you turn the car off. coolant temps are the same 190-195F on all these occasions. Oil temps are the same also. Makes me wonder if that event is designed to cool the a/c condensor not the coolant.

changing your thermostat to 170 wont make your engine cooler, the way heat transfer works is weird. your lowering the coolant temperature not the engine temp. its hard for me to explain but if anyone else gets it please do. also wouldnt you want your coolant hot so it can store more heat? i dunno what i'm talking about but i'm sure someone knows where i'm going with it

1) Cooler AIR is always better, cooler engines...depends on the design. Thermostats are well suited for the design theyre put into. No need to mess with it.

2) Thats what you deserve for idling for an _hour_. Geesh

A cooler Tstat doesnt always mean cooler motor, just that the coolant cycles more frequently. MANY parts of the motor will never be any cooler than the oil that coats them internally, no matter what the coolant does.

Also..as you cycle the coolant thru the system quicker, you can reach a point where you cannot remove heat from it any faster, and you will overheat. Coolant needs dwell time in the radiator to properly cool down for the next cycle. Mind you..in the 1G 7's we remove the Tstat but internally block off the bypass (or we would massively overheat) because we run larger radiators to make up for it..we need the flow rate flat-out.

One last thing..oil temp..too cool is way more dangerous that too hot..dont overcool the oil either.
