Towing behind an RV

I just picked up my Shinka a couple of weeks ago, and I am wondering if it will be possible to tow it behind our RV this summer. The salesman at the dealership said it shouldn't be a problem, but I'm not sure how reliable this information is since he couldn't even tell me where the oil filter is.

The only real problem I can see is loading it on the tow dollie because the appearance package makes the front end hang so low, but I think we should be able to modify the ramps on the dollie to reduce the incline. As long as I have the tranny in N I shouldn't have to worry about doing damage correct?

Have you read in the manual how to tow the 8? There are some special requirements but nothing you can't get around. You either have to put the rear wheels on skates or tow it backwards.

Yes, I have read the manual. The manual made it sound like my only real option was to buy a flatbed. I'm not crazy about the idea of skates, and I'm not sure about being able to back my car up on to our dollie.

Has anybody out there towed an 8 backwards?

I have seen vehicles with a driveshaft disconnect installed, but I don't know if anything like that is made for an RX-8. If you could get one that would solve your problems.

Back it onto a dolly, I know I'd like to follow even an RV then!

I guess I was operating under the misconception that since I have a manual transmission that towing would be a breeze. I asked my hubby if he would consider selling the dollie and buying a trailer large enough for the 8 and both cycles.........................he shot me down - can you believe it?

I used to flat tow my RX7 5spd behind a 26ft Class A motorhome. I think you will find backing up the car on the dollie will be next to impossible. A trailer would work best. The dollie would be easyer to store when not in use.

Make sure your tow vehicle will handle the weight of the trailer plus car. For example, a U-Haul auto transport trailer weighs ~2,000 lbs. and add to that the ~3,000 lb.-RX-8 and you are at 5,000 lbs. I'm dealing with that problem right now with using my V6 4-Runner (5,000 lb towing capacity) to tow my 2nd gen RX-7 track car and I haven't come up with a satisfactory solution to the problem yet. I'm not comfortable with no margin in the towing capacity.
