I'm guessing you havent searched the forum or read your owners manual. If you do not have a manual, go to dubdubdub dot mymazda dot com and download one.

jmc23200,
Good tip to download the owner's manual.

What does your manual say about check the manual transmission fluid level? If it's like mine, it says NOTHING about check MT fluid live ...... unless I'm blind.

Anyway, OP posted and got answered at this thread: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/transmittion-oil-175626/

he also failed for not searching.

he also ALSO failed for not reading his manual. don't have it? He got a Mazda, he got a computer with internet access, he "found" this web site. but is mazdausa.com 's owners section that hard to find ?? failed.

One more thing, what is "transmisssion" anyway ? failed.

You kids today! Back when I was your age, checking gearbox and rear end oil was part of a lube job. Somewhere between changing the engine oil and hitting every zerk fitting with grease, you'd remove the fill plugs for a look.

Thats because you dont have to. You should look for the flux compasitor section in your manual too. Since its not in your manual, does it mean you have one? Good luck finding out about your left and right falangy.

Just stick your finger in the upper, fill, transmission hole. The fluid should be flush with the lower edge of the fill hole. When filling the transmission (topping off or after a drain), when the new fluid starts to run out the the fill hole the level is proper. Use Redline MT-90 btw.

nah, that's it; one to a noobie customer. I expect he'll search "transmission DIY" from here on. "Teach a man to fish."

Teach a man to fish and he will turn you into a slave and rape your women and children. You gotta keep them dependent enough that they still need you

Thanks for the responses, for the most part. This was pretty much what I found searching, and I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything... Thanks again for the help, and hopefully I can figure out why the shifting isnt as smooth as it used to be.

Isnt as smooth simply means your "transmisssion" is(are) having problem(s).

Drain and replace with Redline MT-90. Good stuff and you'll eliminate the fluid vitality variable as you further troubleshoot.

75w90 is for the differential, not the transmission.

edit: noting your 2300+ posts I assume you know the difference and were just taking the thread in a somewhat-related direction.

No, have not tried Castrol Syntec 75w90 in the differential, but I'm a fan of Castrol 5w-30 in the oil pan.

I have heard of this as a good RX8 manual transmission oil- http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-744-cast...-gear-oil.aspx
but not tried it yet.

I would shy away from anything "universal" since they do not test these on every different type of car.

"It meets the need for a 'universal' gear oil which can be used in automotive manual gearboxes, transaxles, transfer boxes and final drives"

Since it will work for all of these, I am assuming that there are additives that will allow it to work in all of the different applications. Do you really want extra additives that may or may not damage any of the 8's internals? Stick with something that others have already tested.

It could be leaking.... also our Subaru Impreza manual trans has a dipstick. Though that is a bit different cause it has a differential in it too.

too busy to read the rest... so here is a reply :D

If it wasn't said, raise the car level and open the fill plug. Fluid will probably come out a little or it will be up to the bottom of the plug. In an RX8 the gear changes can get notchy on stock fluid and of course when the fluid is old, so a lot of people change to Redline MT-90. If you haven't done so, it might be a good idea.

+1

just waiting to see where it goes.....but just so you know you dont even need to worry about it unless for some odd reason you are leaking (get fixed immediately!) or just changed out your clutch (this could cause you to spill some of it although you should just go ahead and replace it if your already that deep into your car)
