TSB -vs- Dealerships and Rebuilding Tranny
I am still just a tad confused about TSB's versus recalls. I know recalls they pretty much HAVE to do...but TSB's...is that up to the dealership to decide whether its worth it.
I have rusting brake rotors and I believe I saw that this on the TSB list. Maybe not. I DEFINATELY saw the squeaking brake TSB though. Is this something that they will fix without a problem?
I'm asking this because they are rebuilding the transmission because of the grinding in 4th gear at high rpms. The ordered a new set of synchros and gaskets....should be fun. I just want them to do all of this while they have it.

TSB means - A Well known/document problem on the car. with the proper fix + hours you can charge for it.
Recall means - a known problem that will compromise the safety of the car. Dealership MUST fix it and follow exact guidelines from the Auto Manufacture. (Minus that follow guidelines part, cuz most of the time dealership still dont listen, look at last recall)
So there is a different. In the end, yep, TSB is up to the dealership. and Recall they have to do it even they might not like it. They can charge you for doing TSB as soon as you're out of warranty, but Recall is ALWAYS free.
For the brake TSB, it really depends on your mile on car + the dealership's willingness. If they're cool, they will do it. If they're a bitch, they will want money from you.

If your car has a problem and under warranty, they will fix it for free... TSB or not. If your car does not have a problem and under warranty, they will NOT fix it for free... TSB or not.
If there is a recall, they will fix the problem if you have it or not for free.

nycgps is correct, when it comes to tsb's it is up to the dealership to perform the repairs whether the car is under warranty or not...especially when it comes down to brakes, which are very tricky and can open a can of worms for the dealership

Thats what I was getting at. When you install FI you can pretty much kiss your powertrain warranty goodbye. You can always remove it and your bumper to bumper warranty may still cover other things.

While technically true, what happened is I had complained prior to the FI install about the shifting issues in my transmission (32k miles). That dealership gave me a bunch of BS about being unable to replicate the issue. At any rate, because of this, I could show them this was a preexisting situation and wasn't caused by the turbo since the turbo was installed afterwards (And I had documentation showing when the turbo was done). Even with this, the dealership would only work on my car if my car was stock - at the time I had the turbo and no cat. So the turbo was pulled, and the cat installed.
The rest went smoothly. I even had the flywheel and clutch replaced while the tranny was out. But I'm now always apprehensive about transmission damage because mine was hurt before the car had any power and it wasn't like I broke anything. I even changed tranny fluid 4x in 4 years.
The only good thing I have to say is that I have the latest transmission design. So it should not need any of the earlier TSBs concerning shift forks. Maybe it'll stand up better.
